The UP is once again bringing it's Big Boy steam engine across Iowa. Just went through Carrol enroute to an overnight stop in Boone and then CR tomorrow.

For those in or around CR - it's leaving Belle Plaine at 12:30 tomorrow (or is scheduled to, I think it usually runs behind), which should bring it into CR from the west at ~1:00

It'll likely part at the Beverley Yard, near Edgewood Rd just south of Hwy 30, overnight, but it isn't open or available to the public during that time. Last time it was in town you could see it from Edgewood overnight.

Then it leaves through town around 8:30 Friday morning. The previous tour I caught it out by Indian Creek Nature Center - but that track follows Hwy 30 for a long way East of CR, so there's lots of good viewing spots along there.

Agree. I took my son to see it come in along Otis last night. The timing this trip is not the best for us working folks/school kids.

Got to thinking last night. Fairly disappointing that it will be in CR all afternoon and evening with no public access. Would have been nice to bring it in to town maybe park at Green Square for a couple of hours.

For the train nerds...

Here is a video of the 4014 helping a stalled train over a hill near Blair, Nebraska --

That video there shows (at least for now) the most recent (and perhaps the last) time a steam engine was performing actual revenue work for a U.S. railroad.
