Twister Sister Summary - Coaching Possibilities

Lyndsey Fennelly seems to already have some strong opinions on the program. Just give her an official seat at the table.

Seriously though, good for her on retirement. These NIL related changes have to be exhausting for "old-timers".

I am guessing open discussions throughout. They probably knew Bill's plan of possibly next year being done, and also knew they weren't going to be the head coach, so exit plan a year early and now hopefully name a Coach in Waiting. I would hope not Billy, but if it is. Let's just get it out there.
The plan was for Fennelly, Steyer, and Schaben to go together in 2027, when Fennelly's contract ends. With everything that's happened with the team and in her personal life, it sounds like she's had enough.

For everyone thinking Billy is going to be the coach-in-waiting, when has Pollard ever named a coach-in-waiting? If Billy was the coach-in-waiting, why hasn't he been promoted to Associate Head Coach (Steyer's position), and Steyer dropped back to an Assistant Coach? Do people really think Pollard is going to make Billy the coach-in-waiting for a year, then promote him? This isn't a Creighton situation in which Alan Huss was brought back with head-coaching experience to take over for Greg McDermott.

I never really understood the Fennelly family hate. Disappointed in results after high pre-season expectations & a stagnating philosophy? Sure. I think he should’ve moved on after the season fwiw.

Has Billy, or Bill for that matter, ever publicly commented or expressed interest in the HC job? It’s only ever hearsay of what conversations they’ve had with JP.

“He kicked out his top assistant and friend of almost 40 years just to give it to his son!”
Y’all sound dumb as ****.

I think her husband is older and was retiring so that was likely a big part of her decision. She also seems "old school" so the NIL/Transfer Portal may have played into the decision.
She definitely handled more of the HS recruiting and Billy was portal.

Over the years a number of players have said she was a key reason they came to ISU. I believe she was a calming factor many times for the team. Had this not been Bill's last season this would be a big loss for stability. Best wishes in retirement.
Totally agree. Just go look at the all the comments from former players on her IG post. Several who have transferred out even- Diew/Fritz/both younger Joens. A testament to the impact she’s had in her time as a Cyclone.

Wait until her father in law is no longer the coach. Im guessing as opinionated as she is that she still holds back a lot of what she wants to say.

Familiarity breeds contempt?

Bill had a few rough stretches, but he's been no worse than many coaches. Yes he makes good money (I think it's the going rate), but he has Iowa State in his heart in my opinion. He is sundowning, I'm going easy on him.

Huh. Assuming this is essentially a done deal (since I don't think CW would have posted it otherwise), what would make her leave Auburn for a somewhat lateral move where her job might be in danger after one season? She's not an obvious choice for a coach-in-waiting situation.

Beyond all that, she does seem like a great choice as an associate head coach.

Assistant contracts are usually 1 year deals and she got a promotion by being named associate

Yes, but assistants don't normally go somewhere expecting to last only one season. Here, there's a very good chance she'll only be here one season unless she was told she's the coach-in-waiting or that ISU will tell the head coach in 27-28 they have to keep her.

It’s just the life of an assistant coach. You don’t know if that coach is there the next year or not. You never have 100% certainty if your contract is getting renewed or if the coach will be back or not

Ideally. But coaching is a pretty nomadic life. So I doubt she's intimidated by potential for a 1 year gig.

Plus, how many P4 jobs opened up this spring? My guess is less than a dozen. So there were less than a dozen Associate Head Coaching jobs available this spring. What's better:
  • Make around $200k and be Associate HC at ISU for possibly a year.
  • Make around $170k to maybe get an Assistant job with stability
  • Not work and make $0
