Heard this morning that Twisted Vine is closing its doors on July 5th. We were just there last Saturday. I remembered they started out of St. Charles, moved to West Des Moines just south of Valley West Mall and to its current location south of Fong’s (the old Peace Tree Brewery.

There will be a lot more of this, Iowa is way behind the national curve. I went to the Valley West location a few times with friends and I was disappointed every time.

Unless Gen Alpha reverses Gen Z's trend of reduced in-person socialization, we're going to see a continued decline in businesses centered around social gathering and being third spaces.

Yeah def agree. I'm always getting on my kids for going out and being social vs screens. As an adult any night I have free to actually go have drinks with friends is most cherished but seldom happens with kid schedules.

It's not just in person socialization though, Gen Z consumes alcohol in a much different fashion than we did. All of the different beverage categories are getting crushed right now. Seltzers and RTD's are in the best shape out of them all though. Legal weed is a big part of this discussion too.

That all comes back to in-person socialization though.

People drink alcohol because it's a social lubricant. If you aren't interacting with other people, there's not really a point to drinking for most people. Gen Z generally prefers to stay home, get stoned, and scroll their phones. Weed is better for relaxing by yourself than alcohol.

Their choice in vices seem to stem directly from their preferred use of free time. All just my opinion and anecdotal observations.

To be fair this trend started before Gen Z was born. I first remember reading about it in the 2000 book Bowling Alone by Robert Putnam. It kind of went from people still going out but being less social and less likely to be part of groups to not really going out much at all.

There’s also the chicken or the egg question about third spaces. Young people are spending less and less time in them, but there are also significant less third spaces available to them. Many spaces and businesses are either much more expensive or not built for longer periods of time spent there.

The other major shift is people, particularly younger generations, becoming more health conscious. I tend to think this is at least as big of a factor, but at the very least it is one of the factors Contributing to the reduction in the alcohol industry in addition to the socialization/third space changes.

They have quietly been up for sale for about a year. They got absolutely ****** by the ongoing construction around them. Until that area starts building up with more apartments anything that goes into that location will continue to struggle.
