Here's a good article about the town that "Vinci" is based on. It's a good setting for a show like this, where corruption rules, and nobody really wants to upset the apple cart.

Last nights episode was my favorite of the season so far. Lots of great dialogue, went deeper into a few more back-stories, a couple action scenes thrown in to keep you more intrigued. Really liking this season so far, hope it only gets better.
Yeah, he's got some definite "in the closet" stuff going on there. Which is an interesting character in a major drama, we don't see that a lot.
I don't know if I agree that it's a "mess". But there is a LOT of the story to pull together in a VERY short time frame!
This should have been a 12 show season. Too much stuff. Farrell, Kitsch and McAdams have been awesome.
I agree, of the 4 main characters I think Paul and Frank are the ones with a chance of dying. Frank because he feels he is still on top and will try to push his boundaries too far to get what he wants. and Paul, I could see him dying in a shootout and saving either Roy or Ani, dying doing what he loved, and somewhat escaping his messed up life, leaving it in a way he wanted to be remembered a hero and a straight-family man.
I just can't see them keeping all of the main characters alive again, after the way last season ended.
My guess is his wife gets killed because of a decision he makes. Even better, she will have been pregnant.

I agree with that. I'm still having trouble piecing everything together. Season 1 was more straightforward and easy to follow. The cast is just as good though if not better.

I think the biggest problem with this season is that the setting is too well known to viewers. Corruption in LA? Been there, done that. Chinatown, LA Confidential, Mulholland Falls, Training Day, Dark Blue, etc.
Season 1 gave us a mystical death cult in Louisiana. It's far less trodden territory.
That said, i'm still enjoying season 2. I just understand why some people aren't.
I'll also say that the worst thing that ever happened to True Detective: Season 2 is True Detective: Season 1. It was a very hard act to follow.

I was watching a rerun of a couple episodes last night. I had it running on two TVs as I was working in two rooms and moving between them. Interesting that the TVs weren't synced and there was a slight lag on one versus the other, and it finally highlighted what has completely bothered me about this season: the dialogue. Or maybe I should say the lack of dialogue!
The back and forth banter between characters is rarely beyond 4-5 word sentences! It's bizarre! Between TVs you got to hear an entire 4-5 word sentence with a long pregnant pause and then the other character would do the same followed by a pause. It was funny listening to Vince and Collin go back and forth in cave-man-speak!
