Trevor Downing... burn the redshirt?

I'm not overreacting, i'm going off of what you've said. i'm not sure how you can say someone has pro potentially when they haven't even played a snap of college football.

I'm going to assume coach Myers is just pleasantly surprised by the progress he's made thus far, but if Downing plays this year, we're in trouble.
When referring to yourself as I, it should always be capitalized.

IMO, it was still in transition to the type of line we want from spread to larger and more punishing. Pretty sure we're more experienced overall coming into this year than we were going into last, and a lot of guys have more time in the system too.

Imo the line started to be effective especially late in games late last season. Weren't great in the bowl but Memphis seemed to stack things up too.

With the new rules, I think it's now safe to assume Downing will redshirt but still see significant minutes in 4 games this fall. He is someone that will benefit tremendously from the new red shirt rule change!

I agree with that. I fully expect to see him in the two deep. But, I don't expect to see him in more than 4 games. It will be really interesting to see how they handle the new RS rule. If ISU is up 2 TDs late vs SDSU or Akron, do you play some of the TRFR? Or do you hold them out in case there's an injury and then give them some time in the last few games when they are more ready?

You can bet if the new rule was in place last year, we would have seen Hudson and Bolton in mop up time, maybe Milton and Young, Vance would have gotten some special teams play, Leo would have gotten 4 games in, Bowens, Jones and Lang would have seen more snaps too. This should really help our depth, as we had a lot of starters playing special teams that can maybe take a few extra plays off.

Sorry but he isn't beating out Hudson or Bolton for the guard spot as a true freshman.

Bolton is just 2 months older than Downing and enrolled 1 semester before Downing did. Downing may never beat him out, but I don't think age/experience will be much of a factor

Ok so I see I'm not doing a very good job of getting my point across. I'm getting a lot of dislikes on my posts without responses so I better clarify myself.

First of all, my point is that if a guy can enroll early and he's physically and mentally ready to make a significant impact that first fall, and he's needed, play him. Red shirting is great, but the future isn't guaranteed. If you have a known commodity today, use it.

Next, Kene is a great example of this. He was ready. We needed him. He played. Had we red shirted him just for the sake of not burning eligibility, he would have missed 2016 (red shirt) and 2017 (injury). Essentially, he would have lost a full year. As it is, he's lost nothing.

Campos is the opposite. We redshirted him his freshman year. I have no idea if he was ready or not (probably not) but he ended up missing all of 2016 due to injury and lost 2 years. 2013 (red shirt) and 2016 (injury). He could have applied to get another year, but we heard the same reason cited as we've heard time and time again. His body was ready to retire.

Not everyone's body can physically handle 5+ years playing big time football. Those NFL guys you see with long careers are the exception-- not the rule. The other 95% play maybe 1 or 2 years after college or retire after their senior year.

This obviously all becomes moot if Downing isn't ready to go.

If a guy can help you this season and the kid is "ready" regardless of age and class you play him. We need to put together a monster line this year - not dream of what might be 5 years from now.

Agree. The first year a coach may sit on a freshman in order to get the ducks in a row for the future. Plus they are usually given a honeymoon year to blame issues on the prior coach. After that, the coach has to look at putting the best out there.

We also need to remember, who we deem as best and the coaches deem, may be way different. We don’t see them daily in practice.

I'm assuming you're posting this because you're agreeing with me and that's the point I've tried to make.. even though a lot of people have disagreed.

So you'd burn the redshirt halfway through game 12? Or when is the cutoff..

You're trying to over-simplify a complex situation

Is it a game to win the conference? Do we have a losing record? I think you over-complexify...

Play the best knowing each and every one of those guys are being recruited over immediately. The pipeline is getting full, the talent in the OL room appears to be growing, the familiarity with the system taking hold so play the best. If you hold a guy out because of what he MIGHT do in 3-5 years, you have no faith in your recruiting.

I think so... If a kid is ready and he can add meaningfully to on-field success, play him.

The days of CPR are gone when we HAD to put 250 pound DL in the game. If young kids are playing going forward, it's (hopefully) not out of desperation but out of ability to positively impact the game.

I have no idea if Trevor Downing is physically ready or not to play right away.

But what I do know is that the new redshirt rule will make this season interesting for very many youngsters.

I think that's a little excessive especially when we are talking about the OL. A 18 year old vs a 22 year old is a huge difference when you you're talking about 300 lbs. Boys vs Men.

Agree. I don't know **** about who is ready or not ready, the coaches will at some point this fall. I like the new redshirt rule. If nothing else it has a great motivational aspect to it. Before you could work your ass off and maybe be ready and able to play late in the season but could be held out so as to not "spend" one of your four years. Now you'll get a chance to hit the field, maybe in formation, maybe on special teams, but I think it's a big deal.

This is a great thing obviously, but it will have the coaches needing to make some interesting decisions, especially early in the season.

Let's say for example that hopefully ISU is destroying SDSU in week one and there is 8 mins or less left in the game. You don't want to leave your starters in and risk injury, but do you really want to use up one of Downing's 4 games on the first game of the year either?

I suppose in that situation maybe you put in a 3rd or 4th string guy instead of a promising young freshman, right?
