Trevor Downing... burn the redshirt?

I'm probably in the minority, but I say play the players that give you the best chance to win more games now. If that means you burn a redshirt and lose that player a year earlier down the road, so be it. The tradeoff is if you win more games, you have a better chance of recruiting equivalent or better players down the road.
With that being said, the player should be a clear difference maker, and should play meaningful snaps in at least half the games, otherwise it starts to be a questionable decision.

Agreed. The best players should (and under Campbell, will) play. If Downing is one of their best options in the fall, so be it. Good on him.

But the long term goal of the program should (and again, under Campbell, will) be to get recruiting to the point where a true freshman would have to an elite blue chip player to leapfrog older, more established players in the program. They just aren't there yet.

What was the context for Meyers comment on Downing standing out. Has he stood out and impressed beyond where they thought a true freshman OL should be, or has he stood out to the point he should be on the 2 deep?

I took it as Downing being further along than they had anticipated (given his youth).

I didn't take it as he was pushing for early playing time.

Could be wrong though.

Downing playing this year may depend on if Oge is healthy. Hopefully he is, because he is a large man and we could use some of those in the run blocking game

Any chance Colin Newell plays this year? Looks like he was at center in some of the scrimmage video. I think I recall seeing he won Scout Team Offensive Lineman of the Year too. The roster only lists him at 282, but in the video he looked bigger than Good-Jones.

Edit: I looked back and Newell was named Offensive Scout Team Player of the Year.

Downing was highly rated and a priority recruit for CMC. I am sure he has high justifiable potential. Reality is that in D-1 Power 5 football rarely does an 18 year old have the physical maturity to compete against 22/23 year old men "in the trenches". And the difference is not just physical, mental reaction and technique takes study time and repetition. Almost all offensive linemen for those reasons are 3rd to 5th year players. I speak from experience.

This kid has been on ISU’s campus for 3 months, hasn’t even gotten through spring ball and you’re already saying he’s got size, strength, intelligence and has an NFL future?

Very rarely do true freshman start/play, so if he’s playing next year he’s either an absolute monster or our OL is in some serious trouble. I’ll bet the house that he doesn’t see the field this year.

You might not know what potential means. I said David Irving had Pro potential before he ever played at ISU and got the same flack. You can just tell with some guys. Everyone knew Lazard had Pro potential before he played here.

Just because you have potential doesn’t mean you live up to it.

Weight training has come so far in the last 20 years. Many lineman were recruited because they were big kids but needed a couple of years in the weight room to develop. We're seeing more and more high school kids that have already been getting the proper training so they are so much further along than in years past.

They mentioned him last week on the radio that he's up to 295 and pushing JGJ to move him to guard.

What I think will end up happening is he'll be our 7 or 8th guy. That's a tough spot because it's likely 1 or two guys are going to miss time this yr. So do you jump him with the 9 and 10 guys or play him? He wouldn't start but he'd be much needed depth. I say, in that case, play him.

I would say it depends on when that happens and the situation. If there are injuries early in the year probably just burn the RS and play him. Late in the year it would come down to what our record is, and what's the situation. Do we have a chance at a bowl game? Are we already eligible? Are we out of it for a bowl game? Each scenario brings different things to the table on whether or not to burn the RS.

I'm hoping they can keep the RS, but the staff is going to do what is best for ISU football.

If he’s ready to help us win as a true freshman, play him. If he’s not ready like most true freshman, redshirt him. It’s pretty clean cut.

So you'd burn the redshirt halfway through game 12? Or when is the cutoff..

You're trying to over-simplify a complex situation

He never said he has "potential" everyone has potential. He said he HAS NFL talent, you can't possibly know if he has NFL talent when he hasn't even played a snap of college football.

And please dont compare Downing to David Irving. Irving was a 6'7" 17 year old kid when he came into ISU and was a freak of nature (I was on the team with him, I saw this first hand) with all respect to Downing, he should not be in the same breath as David Irving.
