Transfer Portal Post-NIL

January is about to get very interesting as NIL brings a whole new layer to transfer season, it looks like the SEC is already offering players money to leave. This does not leave small market teams who depend on developing 3-star players in a great place.

Gary Patterson says SEC schools trying to poach player on his roster (usatoday.com)

Well, let's all just hope those 3 star players CMC develops into 5 star talent think "culture" is more important than a paycheck.

Wow, I don't know if this is Apocalyptic, but def gonna change things in a way I didn't imagine at first.
What program can endure losing 25-schollie players at semester break ?

"...The rules have changed. There is no wrong anymore — the bottom line to it is I can lose 25-30 guys on scholarships by January...."

To make room they're going to have to not renew scholarships or take fewer high school players. It'd be hilarious for TCU to take the flame-outs from texas and continue to beat texas.

I think people are missing this to a point. These teams can't have 200 players on the roster and they are already getting the top recruits.

The ability to reach out and poach these developmental kids really sucks from a recruiting standpoint. Hell, you could hypothetically have the Bama's of the world just selectively recruit the top HS kids then "buy" the remaining holes in the roster through NIL.

If your team is losing 23-30 kids a year though I'm guessing it's not an NIL problem...

You hit on something that some were talking about (warning) before this became legal. The blue's won't recruit much HS talent anymore unless it's sure fire 5 star. They will just comb place like ISU for the latest Breece Hall and offer him a butt load of money to transfer. CMC has just become a developmental coach for the big boy's. That is unless the deep pocket money players for ISU want to p*** in the weeds with the big dogs and pony up.......every year.

X amount of "top recruits" turn out to just be guys.

Always be closing.

This is the unfortunate reality we're about to be in unless something changes. "Thanks for developing him, we'll take him from here with a $300k sign-on bonus".

Is there a possibility that Alabama's #1 running back is hurt in the 2nd game of the season, and they approach a Breece Hall to transfer that week to play for them?

The scenario might happen on occasion, but Gary is greatly exaggerating how often it will happen. SEC schools would have to run off a bunch of their players for this to happen.

They can have a crapton of walk-ons though receiving enough money that they don't really care about the scholarship.

I doubt a school would release someone from their LOI until after the season.
