Nil was coming and will not go away. Nil without structure (rules and regs) was not going to be pretty. This was easy to see - my original guess for chaos was 12-15 months. I was wrong by 364 days. Those of you that endorsed nil because "it's the right thing to do" are crazy, imo. It is essentially unbridled capitalism which rarely, if ever, turns out well and that is where we are.

The University of Chicago, a national champion and collegiate powerhouse from the 1890's thru 1930's, walked away from DI athletics in 1940 (?) because of cheating, money, etc. So essentially it has been the wild west since DI athletics have started. The NCAA (started its power play in the 50's ??) and on its good days has been unfair and ineffective. SCOTUS this year finally sealed DI's fate this year.......back to the wild west of the 1890's to the 1930's.

The solution is obvious and has been discussed. All you need to look at are the pro leagues of the NFL, MLB, and NBA. Many self-made entrepreneurs, corps execs or inherited money ((generally republican) that embrace equal revenue sharing, generally socialistic, for the greater good of the league. This excludes Green Bay which is "community owned."

All these big egos, bite their lips til they bleed, endorse a strong commissioner and equal revenue sharing except for suite and stadium non-sports revenue. They endorse the "greater good concept" which is intriguing for all of the "old rich guy's club.". Sorry for the side comment.

The process of the fix has started when the PAC12, ACC, AND Big 10 created a make believe alliance. This was nothing other than an FU to the SEC. The Power 5 commissioners eventually will have to be the adults in the room to endorse a strong commissioner for DI football. How long does this take - my guess is 3-5 years. I hope it is much sooner. Patterson's hyperbole is good because it gets the conversation going amongst the masses.

The existing big 4 conferences currently want it both ways - unbridled capitalism while they know it is not good for the sport. They are afraid of the real and proven solution - see the pro leagues. Liberal institutions that want unbridled capitalism is fun to watch though.

It will get worse before it gets better. How long, who knows?

For the people that want to define and argue about socialism and unbridled capitalism, please don't. Please assume I used these as descriptors for ease of conversation.

I think people are missing this to a point. These teams can't have 200 players on the roster and they are already getting the top recruits.

The ability to reach out and poach these developmental kids really sucks from a recruiting standpoint. Hell, you could hypothetically have the Bama's of the world just selectively recruit the top HS kids then "buy" the remaining holes in the roster through NIL.

If your team is losing 23-30 kids a year though I'm guessing it's not an NIL problem...
Who cares about the number of scholarships when you can pay “walk ons”.

He should probably look in to why so many of his players are leaving.
Because the transfer portal rules are dumb. A player can enter it anytime. There are more kids in the portal than scholarships for them.. there should be a period at the end of a season, to prevent rash decisions and bad advice from “handlers”.

Boy, this NIL sure is going to be the death of college football. I liked it better a year ago when schools weren’t trying to poach and/or pay players…….
I get the sarcasm, but the rules reduced it. The gloves are off. Combine NIL with no rules, with transfer portal that’s wide open, with realignment….it’s the trifecta that may combine to ruin CFB. Not to mention the impact to all the other college athletics. Need a governing body with rules and real stroke to manage this for the benefit of all.

If a coach can leave at any time, a player should be able to leave at any time.

Well said.
Massive salaries for coaches? Fine.
Facilities arms races? No worries.
No parity with only the same few teams dominating recruiting and having a legitimate shot at a title? That's great!

Players can make money from their NIL?
YOU'RE RUINING COLLEGE SPORTS!!!!
It’s not that simple. Combining NIL, with no governance, with transfer portal and realignment is going to negativity impact college athletics as a whole. As long as all of CFB get paid, we don’t care about the other sports? Non-revenue sports got cut last year, when CFB revenues were down. Wait until ADs decide they now need that money to pay FB players more. It’s going to get much worse before it ever gets “better” and we may not like the better much either.

Great example of an exception. However, the portal is a @&#$ show right now with more kids in it than scholarships. I am suggesting rules that protect them from themselves and handlers.

I agree with this in a way. But I look at what's happened to college wrestling with realignment and the Big10 financial superiority. You essentially have two levels where the Big10 is dumping so much money into facilities that no one outside the conference can compete for team titles. So you still have regional interest for your school, but it just isn't the same as it was.
Interesting example. Could CFB be headed that way?

I agree that's what's needed, but I have a hard time seeing it happen.
The NCAA could have tried to head off the NIL issue years ago. It's not like it's been kept a secret. Shoot, the O'Bannon suit was filed 7 years ago.
The current NIL situation is entirely a result of the NCAA refusing to budge, and then when push came to shove, they threw up their hands and said "You're all on your own"

There's very, very little chance that the NCAA is going to be the governing body that you suggest is needed. They don't have the credibility or clout. And the Court system has a very clear directive from the SCOTUS on how their business model should be viewed.

So the way you get a strong governing body is most likely coming from the conferences themselves. The SEC has the ability to get past antitrust laws in a way the NCAA can't, because there are other power 5 options out there besides their conference.

I don't get this either. It's like the Star Trek episode Mirror, Mirror (which I saw last night), where at the end of the episode Good Kirk challenges Bad Spock regarding how illogical and stupid it is to continue on down a path that you know will ultimately lead to your own destruction. If one thinks that NIL is going to destroy college football, and one wants college FB to survive, why on earth would one support NIL?

The fallacy, of course, is that college athletics needed/needs NIL and pay-for-play. It didn't/doesn't. But now we have it, and we have a pretty good glimpse of where it is going...
NIL needed to happen…period. This isn’t a NIL good or bad argument, but that’s where some seem to be. My point is NIL, with zero governance, is a bad idea. Are Those same CFB coaches going to take pay cuts to preserve other sports? If Ferentz is any indication, no. I have concerns about the big picture here.

Then players should also sign a contract with all the comings and goings that come with being a coach. Buyouts, penalties...the entire nine yards. You can't get half pregnant.

I'm all for them being identified as employees so they can unionize. Then you can have contracts.

Then you have professional football. Hence the reason why people are saying it will ruin college football as we know it.

we agree. As I’ve mentioned elsewhere we likely need a new body, not the NCAA. CFB needs an overarching governing body to protect itself from its own selfish, predatory practices And meddling of media “partners”. A CFB commissioner, with stroke, is needed to work with the conferences for the bettermeant of not just CFB, but all college athletics.
