Too big?

The wife says too big.

My new speakers. Got these vintage Altec Lansing Model 19 speakers for cheap and removed and replaced all the beat up/broken wood veneer, stained them and put a few coats of polyurethane on them. I think they fill the space nicely and sound great.

For size reference, photo is next to a 65 inch TV.

What say you, CF? Too big? Not big enough? Adequate?
GET 100 INCH TV!!! PROBLEM SOLVED

As someone who has a soundbar/sub combo in one space and a full Dolby Atmos setup in another, couldn't disagree more. A soundbar simply fixes the complete inadequacy of built in speakers on a flat screen TV. You just don't have the space for the required size and placement to get great sound from a flat screen. But for a primary viewing setup, a soundbar won't ever match a full surround setup. And for the same reason. It doesn't have the size and space to do what the surround setup can. Tech can only go so far before you run into the physics.

OP, go big or go home my friend!
If you have the space there is nothing like Dolby Atmos home theater with a couple of quality subs, truthfully it's better than going to the theater to watch a movie or a ball game during the weekend.
We have both, a quality Klipsch soundbar and one of their smaller subs in the living room, it's no comparison between it and going down stairs and listening to the 7-2 system. You not only watch the movie, you can feel it.

That what your wife tells me. ;).

I got #wrecked. I do have covers for the top horns, but I do like the open horns. That is what makes these stand out. Bottom covers are broken and I'll have to rebuild them. Can't say I disagree with the rest of your post. If I didn't know better, I would say you were my wife using a burner CF account.

Pretty confident that I'm not your wife.

As for the speakers, I get it. Those look to be some pretty unique speakers (at least according to a mild google search), but they just don't fit the room / space.

Kind of like the 75" TV I put in my living room. Just a bit to much for the space and it needs to be designed around.

That said crank that **** up and see what you can rattle off the walls.

Man this makes me sad.

I had an epic stereo system. Huge speakers, the entire set of components, tape deck, CD changer, awesome set u with full surround etc that I spent years updating etc. Then about 10 years ago decided to get rid of it all. Now I am sad I didnt keep it, because I am nostalgic for the retro systems of old.

Now I want to go back and buy a bunch of retro equipment just to have.

As dumb as it sounds, a bigger TV probably would balance the space better. Just make sure to buy it in brown.

Those speakers are super cool. I would bet you bought pieces at different times so none of it is working as well together as it could. I think it's an issue of width. That is just a giant wall of wood. It's completely overwhelming to me. Get the TV on the wall and find a center stand that is vertically oriented and allows you to bring the speakers in a bit would be my suggestion. A little bit of buffer space from the wall on one end and that door on the other would reduce the '10 lb of stuff in a 5 lb bag' thing you have going on here. I'd make the stand black to reduce the amount of wood a bit too.

Keep the speakers, leave the layout as-is, stay married. Pick any two of the three. Good luck.

@GTO , congrats on nabbing one of the most sought-after vintage speakers out there! i'm jealous. except for the size itself, the WAF is pretty reasonable on the Model 19, and i'm sure she'll be able to hear the improvement from the Klipsch.

in my previous house, i had an unfinished basement to play with so i had all sorts of massive vintage speakers over that time (mostly Infinities). i thought i was able to kick the habit when i got to my new house, but i brought home this giant problem a few weeks ago... so tell your wife it could be worse! (also, i know where to get another set of these if anyone else wants to test the strength of their marriage or their drywall....)

First thing I noticed. You don't want your turntable on top of a speaker. The turntable literally works by vibrating the stylus from the vinyl. Adding the vibration from the speaker directly beneath the feet of the turntable is a definite "don't do."
My turntable vibration story...20-30 years ago I lived in a second story apartment, and my stereo rack was setting in the living room by an outside wall, which unfortunately was really the only place it could go. Outside of that wall was the stairway leading up to the second story. Every time somebody walked on the stairway or slammed an outside door, the floor would vibrate noticeably, and if I was playing an LP, it would skip. This became a real pain when I was trying to make digital recordings to my PC.

So, I made a platform for the turntable from a piece of plywood, put an eyelet in each corner, and hung the platform/turntable from the ceiling with bungee cords when I played LPs. You do what you gotta do...

I'd be afraid to crank those to 10. :D

Are those JBL 2360's? Those are amazing, but would definitely get me kicked out of the house!

I did manage to crank mine up over the weekend and test them at about 70/100 volume and it was insane. They need no subwoofer.

The crazy thing is that I had read that they had great instrument separation and I was like "yeah, right". However, both me and my younger son were listening to some songs we've previously heard a ton of times. We were shocked how clearly different instruments stand out and noticed all kinds of sounds we'd never noticed/heard before in those songs. My son was like "this is crazy!"

I am absolutely obsessed with them now. The fact that I had to strip them all the way down to the MDF, re-apply new wood veneer, stain, top coat them, etc. means they're probably not leaving any time soon. I spent 3 weeks working on them just to restore them, so I'm very attached now.

Having a sub do the work at everything 80Hz and below, frees up the main speakers to fill the remaining part of the spectrum and allows them to produces clearer higher frequencies sounds. It also puts less stress on the speakers, less likely to cause a blow out in them.
