If you take 54 west out of Wichita it will save you over 100 miles and about an hour of drive time. I just drove it today and it was a pretty good road. about 40 miles out of Wichita is 4 lane and 70 mph. then the 2 lane in Kansas is 65mph. You will hit some 4 lane in Oklahoma also with 65 mph. The good thing is there really isn't that many towns you have to go through. You come out at Tucumcari, NM and hit I-40. We are in Payson, AZ tonight which is about 80 miles from our hotel in Tempe. The last 50 miles of our drive today was absolutely beautiful country.
You are making me jealous. I was planning on driving this route to Glendale if Iowa made the Fiesta Bowl. This is the route I had planned. Instead I am flying to Miami. Good Luck Clones! I had also planned on going to the Insight Bowl.

we drove down to Arizona a couple years ago and thought New Mexico would be the most boring part but it was actually the complete opposite, just a beautiful drive

Our group (w/ price26) was contemplating going west from Wichita. Since we will be going through that area at night, we thought it would be a safer option (gas stations, help, etc) go stick with I-35 to OKC then west on I-40. Yeah, it adds more miles and maybe more time, but certainly don't want to run out of gas somewhere and not have an open gas station in the middle of nowhere. With the possibility of snow Tuesday night, might be better to stay on more of a main road. I guess we'll find out.

I can't remember if it was mentioned in this thread, but you should take into consideration that there apparently is A LOT of road construction currently on I-35 S in Oklahoma.

I'm leaving at 6:30am on Tuesday. Going straight across Kansas (my driving partner/father balks at 2 lane roads) and into Colorado. Staying in Pueblo then hammering out the last 12 hours on Wednesday.

Reports from the ground in Colorado Springs says no weather expected until the end of the week. So crossing our fingers and hoping for the best.

hopefully around midnight tonight.....so i guess that's Monday/Tuesday...depending on about 5 or 10 minutes either way. We are detouring through El Paso, TX however, to pick up a couple friends on the way. Staying there overnight tuesday into wednesday.

Sooooo....I don't forsee us being able to avoid I-35 in Southern OK. But if anyone has any suggestions, let me know!

Or maybe 44 south out of OKC to Witchita Falls, and then find something that gets me to I-20? Anybody have any experience with any of that area?

So yeah... stuck somewhere along I-10 right now due to snow :skeptical:

On a positive note there are trucks preparing to plow/salt/sand... for the most part the roads were just wet but there was a fun little patch where the pavement instantly disappeared all together for a half mile or so.

So for those traveling... watch out for I-10 west of I-20

This is rediculous given that we're like 10-15 miles from Mexico probably

The panhandle of Texas is supposed to be under a winter storm warning by 6 PM tonight and we're leaving Ames in 10 minutes. Should be a fun drive!

Amarillo by Morning!

Um yeeeeeeeeeeeeah... we encountered snow on the panhandle when we hit it around 4 a.m. . .

Fortuantly what we ran into is past us now, though thats now more in the Texas/Oklahoma border
