The Jackson criticism (in general, not targeting anyone specifically in this thread) I think is overblown. Compared to his stats at Charlotte last year, his per-minute scoring, rebounding, and shot-blocking stats are better this year against better competition than he saw in the AAC, and his field goal and free throw shooting are both a tick better. He's had some stinker games and some head-scratcher plays for sure but overall numbers-wise at least I think he's been a good player for us.
Fans loved Big Rob last year, and Jackson is arguably better.

For anyone that wanted William Kyle III, have you looked at his stats this year? No thanks. 36% FT.

BRE got better every year, especially in year 3 with Otz and Kyle Green. Jackson should take a step this off-season.

Going forward, I'd prefer a center with the traits of either an elite athlete/defender or a threat from 3. Or I win Powerball and buy a lottery pick at the 5 like Duke or Kansas
Can’t say I’m jealous of KU’s 5 man. I think he’s a major reason they’re pretty average his 2 seasons. Jackson did steal his lunch money at Hilton, if you remember.

Jackson is an above average big man. He's not a stretch 5 or a perimeter defender, but March is won by good guard play and he is more than capable of anchoring the frontcourt of a Final 4 caliber team. Our guards going ice cold (minus Tamin) is the reason we're in this awful slump. His biggest issue is that he is truly a large man and can't play all out for >20mpg.

Chatfield is a depth piece who should only be averaging <10mpg, but because we need to rotate Jackson out we need to rely on him for probably too many minutes.
When Jackson shows up he is good but he’s super inconsistent. I think Jefferson has been pretty bullish, big fan of his game. Chatfield hustles hard but he has been mostly a liability in big 12 play. Gives up so many And-1 fouls, can’t really catch the ball in the lane and provides nothing offensively. Again do respect his hustle but he’s looking like a miss portal wise. Jackson has a ton of potential to be a dominant force though imo but hasn’t fully adjusted to big 12 play.

I'd go after Owen Freeman if he turns out to be available, but that's just me.
Nah, he's a tweener. I don't think he's strong/ big enough to play the 5 in the Big 12, nor does he shoot well enough or have the quickness to play the 4. Seems like stylistically he fits at a Big 10 school or maybe Big East or a half step down like the Atlantic 10 or the mountain west

I'd say Jefferson and Jackson are among TJ's hits in the portal, but Heise and Chatfield are his first misses among transfers who were needed to play significant minutes.
I agree with this, for now. Heise should get a chance to redeem himself next season if he wants to come back. Not to mention at least a dozen or so games left this season. But who knows, if he can't get his head pulled out maybe he walks away at the end of the season.

Chatfield was a depth piece signing and I'm not sure that he hasn't lived up to that billing, but his play the last 5 or 6 games or so has him looking completely outmatched at this level. I think he was brought in to be an even poorer man's version of Big Rob, and give one more year of insulation to Rock, which he is doing, but probably at the cost of lowering what this teams ceiling could have been. I think the staff knew they needed to at least hit a single with him, and that maybe they could stretch into a 2- base hit, but right now it's looking like a ground out.

Nice try Owen, get off our forums
I know. Having a '5' with offensive skills is heresy. I'm ashamed of myself.
He has offensive skills?
Offensive like good at offense? Because lol if thats what you meant.

Offensive as in, insulting to the game of basketball? 100% yes

I’d agree, I think Dickinson is a big pile of overrated

I’ll rank em. Happy New Years ya animals!!

In order of program impact/effective hit rate*:
Brockington
Kalsheuer
Bob Jones
Keshon Gilbert
Curtis Jones
Jaren Holmes
Tre King
Jaz Kunz
Osunniyi
Grill
Hason Ward
Jefferson
Jackson
Heise
Chatfield
Enaruna
Paveletzke

Story not finished yet with a number on this list so it’s subject to change, however this list is correct.

*EHR puts weight on program identity, shoulder load %, as well as win-share above replacement.
I’m hesitant to re-eval until season’s end, but there’s a few names that have crept up on this list!

Would love to see TJ's center strategy evolve into recruiting either two types: Shooters or extreme athletes.. Extreme athlete like Cam Lard, Hasan Ward who is a difference makers on defense, plus out jump anyone for blocks and rebounds. Shooters and playmakers like Jefferson, Jaz Kunc, and Tre King can stretch the floor by making defenders guard them away from the basket and are decent to good passers. Sure you want both, but ISU can't pay to afford lottery picks in the front court.

Centers like Jackson, Chatfield, BRE, Solomon Young, and George Conditt are not Elite Eight or Final 4 big guys... They don't stretch the floor, can't pass, and don't make other teams afraid of driving the paint.. Go watch Auburn, Duke, Alabama, and other 1 seeds.. Their big guys are either high end athletes or great shooters who can space the floor. Maybe this isn't possible given ISU's recruiting budget, but I'm tired of wasting good guard play to teams with centers that limit our offense or make our defense supreme
You say you want him to go after guys like guys he’s gone after?

Depends on what TJ had to pay Heise and Chatfield with the NIL funds available. They might have been bargains.

I think Heise and Chat are/have shown their worth. Mostly in the lunch pail toughness category. Heise offensive struggles were documented but he’s no longer a liability.

Chat had a few game stretches where we don’t win without his winning plays. Then a stretch where he seemed more of a liability. He’s back to providing quality minutes.

Can’t call either of them a miss.

If I remember correctly, Tyrese Hunter had a big game against Wisconsin to get to the Sweet 16. I do agree with you- no Brockington all season would have been ugly.
Tyrese played terrible against Wisconsin.

He did hit 7 3’s in that first round game against LSU.

Crazy that team lost ONE non-conference game all year - to Miami. Underrated team, as it most definitely had some really good talent, was great work by TJ that first Portal season.

You are both responding to a post from Feb 6. A lot of posts like that one from that time.
Ancient history!
Both have been valuable and I'd say exactly what TJ was hoping for.

Brockington wasn't that good in the NCAA tourny, but he got us there in the first place. Hunter won the LSU game for us. Kalscheur won the Wisconsin game. He had 22 of our 54 points. Hunter went 1-10 with 4pts. Brockington was 4-15 with 10pts, our 2nd leading scorer.
