with the four transfers this season all looking like key contributors, how would you rank the transfers in the Otzelberger era? by my count he has only 2 (of 16) that didn't necessarily "hit" (Jackson Paveletzke & Tristen Enaruna) , but they were far from flops

How would you order them?
(listed below in chronological order as I came across their names)

Jefferson, Jackson, Heise, Chatfield, Keshon Gilbert, Curtis Jones, Hason Ward, Jaz Kunz, Bob Jones, Jaren Holmes, Osunniyi, Paveletzke, Kalsheuer, Brockington, Grill, Enaruna

He was 4 for 4 in the last cycle which is what I am most interested in.
It’s much easier to patch in complimentary pieces than to fully build a roster in the portal. The first couple seasons TJ needed to find so much production in the portal. This season he needed to find compliments to already existing production.

It's an incredible list of players! Not going to try ranking them. They all deserve credit for re-building the program and taking it to new highs.

Still remember Robert Jones was one of the first (if not the first) and people were pretty underwhelmed. The reporting was that Rob was brought in to change the culture, not put up gaudy stats.

BRE ended up being key in rebuilding this program with a new set of standards. And shows TJ and the staff take a holistic approach rather than going after the splash get (*cough* Coleman Hawkins).

And what's been fun to see is that TJ has struck a balance between recruiting solid HS players and complementing with transfers.

Good HS recruits like Tamin, Milan, Nojus, Rock, Omaha (didn't pan out but was a big get) paired up with stud transfers like Keshon, CuJo, Jefferson, etc.

I don’t think that TJ is a great coach. Good, not great. But what he IS great at is putting together a roster and playing a system that makes the best use of the talent on the roster. And also finding guys that not only compliment the other players, but fit in with the culture.

Kind of the opposite of Prohm. He was not very good at piecing the puzzle together.

That’s a very limited view of what a coach is/does. He’s an amazing recruiter, leader, and culture builder.

He may not be an x’s & o’s savant but I’d argue that is less imperative in the current version of the game than it was in 70’s-00s.

Get your guys, get them gelling, establish some actions and let them go. More like soccer than football.

Add in the portal, ego management etc. there’s not much room for militant x’s & o’s where a coach is allowed freedom to do what he wants as long as he knows the game. From fans, administration and players alike.

TJ is objectively a great coach.

We owe Brockington a ton of gratitude. Dude single-handedly got us to the Sweet 16. Flipped our perspective from prior year 180°.
He's one of my favorite Cyclones. A long-jumper specialist in the era of three-pointers and shots at the rim. Guy averaging ~ 10 ppg at Penn State transfers and becomes all-conference and the second-leading scorer in the Big 12 and an absolute dog on defense. Love him!

Keshon is #1 for me. CuJo, BRE, and Gabe right behind. Brockington would be in the convo for #1 if he was here 2 years, but I think Gilbert’s assists and scoring consistency would still put him on top. Jefferson will be top 3 after next season, maybe after this season.

What does he lack in your opinion? I think you’re wrong. Add up every component and facet of the game and he excels. Simply my opinion.

Calipari wins because of his roster. TJ also lets his assistants coach far more than most coaches.

I vote he’s a great coach.
