Tiger Week

You wonder why he backed out of two real tournaments to play an 18 man field on a course designed for tourists?

You got your answer.

So what was the answer? His game wasn't there? His health wasn't there? That's an easier return than any of the other tournaments? There wasn't any mystery here. He wasn't ready and this tournament put him through 4 rounds of competitive golf no matter what. Lead the field in birdies and eagles and his short game was just fine. This looked much better than Wyndam as far as the future is concerned.

I don't think that swing (designed to protect his back) is going to hold up under pressure. It's great that he is back, but I will be shocked if he ever wins another tournament of meaning OR even be in contention again.

He doesn't have the physical or mental edge over any of the "kids" now. Even if he had the mental part, Dustin or Rory would just rip a drive 100 yards past him - then Tiger would try to be Tiger of old and hurt himself again.

100 yards huh? He's still hitting it right there with Ricky who isn't short by any means. People talked about this in 2013 too and yet, there he was, winning five times and putting another POY on the shelf. Oh, and that swing was the best swing he's had (by far) since he was with Haney.

His short game was hardly "fine" and he still hits it left a lot even with the old man protecting his back swing.

If you're trying to protect your back, you probably will hit it left so I don't know what your point is.

I'm not real sure how anyone could have watched that and come away with a take that it wasn't a positive overall outcome. Once again, it seems like some either just expect far too much from someone who hasn't played in 15 months against a top tier field (Walker and Koepka beat him by a stroke, I suppose their careers are over as well) or they just want to see the struggle continue. The guy had the most birdies/eagles in the field. That wasn't the case at all the last time he was out there. His iron play was really good for the most part and there was no sign he has some huge short game problem that is anything other than rust. I haven't seen a single take from the people around the tournament that this outing was anything less than a success.

100 yards is an exaggeration of course - however those 5 tournaments were before more back surgeries and not majors.

This weekend was zero pressure for him, when he gets to Augusta and has to get up and down to make the cut line - we will see how his short game is.

It was a success that he made it 4 days without getting hurt or embarrassing himself. Although this tournament was more like a group of guys doing away for the weekend to play versus a 6 hour round in the US Open.

Well, I mean the last time the short game apocalypse came he finished like 17th there and it was fine. This was far better than we saw at the Waste Management. I'd say it was even much more positive than the Wyndam event where things looked to be moving in the right direction. He's going to be hitting it out there with Spieth. I don't think he's under the impression that he's going to be hitting it up there with Rory and DJ.

That's want you are really arguing against. It's a self fulfilling prophecy thing with Tiger haters.

For me, I would like to see him have a meaningful comeback. Leading the field in birdies, great iron play and a red hot putter showed some positives. Without the red hot putter the Tiger distractors would have had a lot more to gloat over. All of those doubles showed inconsistency but what were we to expect after that long injury induced layoff. This isn't like he was trying to comeback from a sore wrist or something. I don't super love Woods by any means but golf is more interesting and fun to follow with him in the mix. I'd much enjoy him being competitive again.

You can't hit it left as much as he does and compete.

Period.

I can attest to that. In fact, even if I'm trying to swing through it when my back is hurting, it's likely to go left as I can't fully rotate in my back swing so everything gets ahead of itself.

Everyone in golf would love to see him relavent again, but that ship has sailed.
