Thoughts on Coach, Be Respectful

WHOA WHOA WHOA wait a second. Mike Davis? He was at a tradition basketball school in Indiana and didn't have the success you want and you think he would be a great replacement. Come on.

I recall he coached Indiana to the National Championship game.

My utopian candidate would be Jay Wright from Villanova...probably never happen but hey I can dream...can't I?

Why did he get fired then? Why has he been stuck at UAB?

What happened at the end?

Jay Wright would be awesome but so would Roy Williams.

Assemble a staff of Mike Davis, and get WM out of his crap business. Have WM recruit/assistant, and I think we have something to be excited about. I'm struggling to find possible coaching options. Any other ideas? I'm done with GMAC. Hilton is as dead as Brittney Murphy.

Pretty sure an assistant job would be a pay cut for Morgan.

Mike Davis was an idea. Who do we have a chance of actually getting if GMAC was gone? If you want to shoot down a suggestion provide another option.

You really think that? Mac was a hot name when he was hired. He is a good coach, it just seems him and ISU are not a good match thus far.
You really think that? YES Mac was a hot name when he was hired. I agree, just a name. He is a good coach, it just seems him and ISU are not a good match thus far. You can say the same about any other 4th year coaches with a losing record.

Why did he get fired then? Why has he been stuck at UAB?

He got canned at Indiana because he followed Knight and the expectations at IU were incredibly high...they want National Championships.

That being said, he was 115-79 at IU (55-41 Big 10) with 4 NCAAs and 1 NIT in 6 years.

"Stuck" at UAB? Did you ever contemplate that he likes it there? He is in year four and he has done a very good job at UAB...go look at the record.

Mac did a good job at UNI also.

Mac did a good job at UNI also.

Are you trying to equate Davis' time at IU to Mac's time at UNI? Bottom line is that Davis' current resume is far superior to McDermott's (either now or when ISU hired him).

No his UAB resume. How many games did he win with Knights players at Indiana?

It hasn't worked with Gmac unfortunately.

Probably screwed though, I doubt we can afford to get rid of him because of the ridiculous 3-year extension he got before he ever coached a game. Blame that one on the Athletic Dept.

I think the talent on this team is overrated. We get a couple guys that throw down a dunk or 2 and everyone thinks we have the most athletic team in the country. We have a team full of poor free throw shooters, and guys who are weak. I cannot believe how many times I hear John & Eric say "entry pass tipped away" or "into the lane, loses control" or "free throw missed, tipped out to..".

I think we are victims of expectations being to high. I think recruiting is getting better, and support giving GMac a couple more years.

Craig Brackins- decided to pass up playing in the NBA because he wanted to be good enough to make it a career instead of a couple years and done. Played on the US college national team.

Lucca- We can be ****** at him all we want but he's going to be making close to 6 figures by next year playing PRO ball in Germany. Played on the German National team.

Gilstrap- Has had a double double in all 3 of his first 3 Big 12 games. Named Big 12 newcomer of the week like 3 times now?

You're right, the talent level is overblown. Because those guys are clearly only being hyped up by Iowa State fans, not by people running national clubs or professional basketball leagues.

Edit: moral of the story, the talent is there, the results are not. If not the coaching, why?

I have lurked on this site for years, and I hate to say it, but if this team starts out conference play 1-4 a mid season firing would be justified.

To me, it seems that he may be a little bit of a micro managing control freak in how he coaches. His teams have never looked relaxed, and I see many more frowns and grimaces on their faces than most teams. Couple that with a style of ball that is not super exciting, and any momentum that was developed from the Orr era on is skidding to a halt. Also this player attrition mess is embarrassing.

If we want to experience post season, and have this be a revenue producing sport for the university he needs to win the next three games. If not, it is time.

I'm struggling to find possible coaching options. Any other ideas?

Brian Gregory from Dayton?

My utopian candidate would be Jay Wright from Villanova...probably never happen but hey I can dream...can't I?

Mine too. But you are dreaming...Wright loves Philly.

It's time. We'll have nothing more than moral victories the rest of this year. We may even be done playing meaningful games now. Team hasn't responded and lacks leadership. I love GMac but he's not getting it done for whatever reason. I don't fault him for the first several years but I'm really struggling to find where we are better as a team or program now than last year or the year before. We have consistently lacked depth and athleticism. We don't compare to other B12 teams after all these years. It could just be bad luck and we either wait for luck to change or we try and change the luck ourselves. This isn't a "sky is falling" post and I'm not really even looking for debate as I am a self-proclaimed GMac apologist but for the good of the program in the long run it might be best to consider other coaching options after this season. I know GMac could attain a certain level of success but its hard to see when we get there.

Its off my chest now. Go cyclones!

Very well said. I really like Greg but at some point enough is enough.
