Except they didn’t take their lumps for two years. Their freshmen year they were 17-16. Their sophomore year they made the NCAA Tournament and finished 21-14. If they don’t make the tournament their sophomore then Webber was going to be fired. Then they had the Elite 8 year when Virginia was upset and then last year.
Wade and Brown’s sophomore year was Year 5 for Weber. A miss that year would have meant only two NCAA appearances in 5 years and he would have been fired.

If we were going 21-14 during one of our “take our lump” years then you wouldn’t see some of the same vitriol. 13-18 or 12-19 is a long ways from 17-16 must less 21-14.

I understand what you are saying. My point is a down year this year, will a 21-14 next year going to be good enough for most? We went from nothing in 17-18 to 23 wins last year and he "underachieved". You think for a second we get "just" 21 wins next year the pitchforks will be put away? Especially if some of the newbies go pro again?

Not really but you do you.

No. 16-seeded teams have a 1-135 record against No. 1 seeds in the 80-year history of the NCAA Tournament.

just because its in the ncaa tournament doesn't change the fact it shouldn't happen. UMBC was 144th in kenpom that year, too.

prior to beating virginia umbc had ONE win against a P5 team.. that coming against Nebraska in 2008 when they won 66-64.

guess that 1 win against nebraska makes it ok then

People forget they lost Hunter for the NCAA tournament the year they lost to UMBC. He was a huge piece to that team and when you lose something like that, the entire team chemistry can be thrown off.

Gee, I wonder if we have a guy like that.

I doubt any of the newbies go pro next year.. But I 100% could see people being upset about next season unless we end up in the top half of the conference and / or win a game in the tournament.

Exactly. And I understand we 100% should've beaten FAMU without him. But if we had him, we 100% win that game because of how much production he gives us on offense and defense.

People do not realize how bad the #16 seeds can be.

They are usually the teams that sneak into the tournament by winning the conference tournament from the worst handful of conferences in the country.

So they are from awful conferences and usually not even the best team from those awful conferences because sometimes the #5 seed wins the Southland.

Not all NCAA tournament teams are created equally.

The fact #16 seeds upset #1 seeds at even a much slower clip than you see #2 and #3 seeds go down attests to that fact -- #16 seeds are basically accidents that should not even be in the tournament much of the time. UMBC had to play itself into the tournament and beat Vermont in their conference tournament to make it in the first place.

Kind of like ISU losing Haliburton for that game could throw the entire team chemistry off?

I don't see how a team that was picked to finish in the bottom half of their league and suddenly without their top player having a horrible loss to a team like A&M is that much different than a team that is considered one of the top 4 teams in the country having a horrible loss to a 16 seed in the tournament.

Virginia was literally the best team in the country playing the worst team in the NCAA tournament. It doesn't look as bad because it's in the tournament but imagine the uproar if Iowa State had done what Virginia did that year.. Imagine if we were the first team in the history of college basketball to lose to a 16 seed. We would never hear the end of it.

It took forever to not continually hear about being a 2 seed losing to a 15 seed. Now we just have to occasionally see the clip of their coach being picked up by a player and kicking his legs up in the air.

nah umbc whooped virginias ass

we lost by 2.
I don’t know man.. when a buy team, who had never beaten a P5 team in its school’s history, looks as if they have the game in hand against you with 7 minutes left in the game, you got your ass kicked. Doesn’t matter if it’s a 15 point loss or a 1 point loss, it’s just as demoralizing.
