Frankly I hate when we lose, and when we win I'm relieved as much or more than I am happy. I just hate dealing with their BS.
College football, more than any other sport, is about rivalries, pageantry, and traditions. We are never going to have another football rivalry like the one we have with Iowa (as hard as we try to make fetch happen with Kansas State), and the only other one I can imagine we have is KU for basketball.
Saying we should trim those rivalries out of the sport because opposing fans can sometimes be annoying on social media is just one more reason to be off those awful platforms in the first place, not to cancel the games. Whoever we replace them with would never be even half as interesting of a game.
Who is honestly going to be as excited to beat up (or at least hopefully beat up) another MAC or Sun Belt team each year? Even if it was another P5 school, how interesting would a mid-level Big Ten (e.g., Purdue or Minnesota), SEC, or ACC school be in comparison to going to war with the Hawkeyes?
It is an indefensible position. The rivalry is good for the schools, it is good for the state, and it is good for the sport. If you find "Hawk B.S." too much, then get off Twitter those few weeks. I have found my interactions with Hawk fans live to generally be pleasant enough in real life -- way more than on the Internet.
I say all this as one of the band geeks who got beer thrown on them and all sorts of nasty insults thrown at him when I made my three trips to Kinnick in an Iowa State uniform. I have probably seen worse than most of you and suffered more of it, but even then, I say keep the game on the schedule.
