Anyone using the upside app or something similar to get some money back on your purchases? I hear the ads but haven't put it on the phone yet. TIA.

Another thread posted earlier this year

Without reading back through it, my memory is posters were fairly mixed.

I use it when I remember to claim the reward. Definitely not getting rich here.
Most of the time I'm getting 10-11 cents per gallon, so like $1.50 on a fill up.

Yah that ad about "I've made $200". So dumb.

It would be great for someone that travels for work and uses a company fleet card though.

I signed up for it a little more than a year ago and would generally get around $.15 /gal. After making maybe $10 in the span of a few months I lost interest. I just opened the app and looks like in Ames the biggest cash back has offer is .01/gal at Casey’s.

It’s not hard to use the app but at those prices it’s not worth even the minimal hassle.

Is there a downside to the upside app?
The only way I can see the way these apps make money are by collecting data and selling it. Probably not a huge deal for most. But it could be collecting GPS data (speed, etc) and selling it back to your insurance company or other data brokers that sell it to your insurance company.

As I said in the other one the way to make big money is to utilize the pyramid scheme aspect of it as you get the "passive" income of 1 cent or whatever for every gallon that people that sign up using your invite code pump. Also I have a feeling in other areas it may be more prevalent as around the CR area it is mostly Caseys, a couple of BPs and like two Kwik Stars ranging from .26-.36. Restaurant wise it is 8 total restaurants.

I use it. It's simple. The rewards are small so I don't feel bad if I forget to use it. Every couple of months I'll build up $20 and transfer that to my bank.

It may work better @NWICY for you with as much time as you spend on the road. I guess you just need to make sure the gas station in the small towns use it. I suspect you'll be OK. I think most Casey's and Kwik Whatevers use it. When you're in Minnesota most Holidays participate.

An old coworker used to use this and raved about it. He invited me to join, but at the time, only Casey's would be on the list. I try not to use Casey's gas, and I couldn't find anything very close to my home that was on it. That's been nearly 2 years now, though.

I live in TX and drive quite a bit for work. I use the app and have transferred about $300 ytd.

Just over $300 in two years. Most times the discount is one penny per gallon. Our local Burger King has discounts through Upside as well. It can range anywhere between 10 and 20 percent. Applebee's used to have a 20 to 25 percent discount but have not for several months now.

There are so many reward programs out there to earn significant gas savings if you look around. Hy-Vee Fuel Saver being one of the best IMO, If you need groceries why not stock up during a fuel saver event? They have items around the store too that sometimes you can rack up additional $ on too. I just cashed in my fuel saver the other day and paid less than $10 on a 20 gallon tank. Caseys and Kwik Star have some reward programs too you can rack up some savings on if you frequent those places. I've already saved over $250 this year on fuel with my Hy-Vee fuel saver. My Chase Freedom card is 5% cash back on gas this quarter too and if you do some research there are some good cash back credit cards out there just for gas purchases that have some good cash back rewards.
