I think OU believed Larry Scott when he said that BevoNet was never going to be allowed. THat gave OU bargaining strength. Once Scott started dealing by accomodating the LHN, OU lost bargaining power once the Horns realized they could go west and keep a media advantage.

I think what this means is OU threatening to leave scared the **** out of everybody and Pitt/Syr wouldn't have left the BE except for that threat. And the threat was just a bluff that went too far.

Pretty cryptic and hard to say, but good IMO that it says a majority OU prefer Big XII.

But I agree with what you say, whether that is what it was intended to mean or not. That the Big East was blindsided and only heard about it in the news suggests OU was totally blindsided by this development as well. OU could not intended that result.

How about recreating the Big 8 by recruiting TCU and BYU to the remaining 6 original members? It won't happen, but I could live with that as a conference. Let Texas do what Texas is best at - worry about itself.

Ultimately, I think OU has to be thinking "this thing is going to blow up eventually, why keep pouring our effort into a lost cause".

At least that is my read. Even if everything went to equal revenue sharing, UT still won't have a check for its power in the conference and history tells us that will lead to disaster.

The Big 12 is set up for failure. Whether it is now or later I can't be certain, but Texas will eventually destroy the conference, either directly or indirectly, due to its ego.

Not saying that Texas isn't clearly the most valuable asset in the Big 12, but whenever one member of a conference says "We're better than you and we deserve our own network & extra revenue to place us above everyone else in this terrible conference" there are going to be serious problems - real or perceived.

So let's assume this is true.

It sounds like we could've had BYU, West Virginia, and Pitt before Boren opened his mouth a couple weeks ago to make 12 teams.

Boren opened his mouth to try to bring Texas to its knees. If OU stays, what do they end up gaining? If the Big 12 lives, we'll be at probably 14 teams because we can't leave anybody in the Big East behind. We will have lost Pitt in the process, and diluted revenue per team thanks to the great ratings of Cincy, Louisville, and S. Florida.

If this turns out to be true, I think the posturing will end up turning out to be more costly than if he'd kept his mouth shut.

I tend to doubt this.

Under the conference agreement as it stood we know two were unhappy (justifiably so or not). Not sure how successful it would have been inviting others, that BYU, Pitt, and WVU were all givens. ND was also rumored in the mix and could have affected others' decisions.

No, this is what you hope is going to happen. Every hawk fan is wishing for the demise of the Big 12. My read on the whole thing is that if the revenue plane is leveled, and the exit fee is increased, they will stay. If those two things happen, what makes you think this conference is less stable than the Big 10? You are giddy with excitement over this like all the other hawks. Stay out of this thread.

I think you're over-parsing here. I don't think GG's earlier statements are any more a guarantee of a good outcome than his recent statement is a guarantee of not having a good outcome. He didn't say anything of substance in the first place so I don't see how it represents any kind of shift.

I think this puts pressure on UT to either decide to make the B12 work or leave. MU doesn't want to go to the SEC if they did they'd be gone. SEC is their parachute. KU probably has ACC as theirs.
