The other Rhoads Speech

People always focus on the Nebraska and OSU victory speeches by Paul Rhoads. I think one that is underappreciated is his speech to ISU after their win in the insight.com bowl 2 years ago:

Shows how much Rhoads cared after the game. Does anyone have the video of CPR on the video board after the game. I think that's one of my favorite memories of the game, is seeing Rhoads speechless staring out over the crowd for minutes on end. That's a coach that cares.

The "I'm so proud" speech will always be his calling card, and the one from the other night will get a lot of pub because of the magnitude of the win, but honestly, this one is my favorite. None of the others give me chills like this one. Touching on the classroom, getting these guys ready for life after football, and talking about "doing things the right way" just gets me for some reason.

Great idea for sharing this again. CPR is just awesome. We are so fortunate to have him. It is character and values like his that is the best protection against so much of what is wrong in college sports these days.

Here are a couple of other interesting notes:

At 1:18, you hear his voice in the background telling the players who are celebrating with the trophy in the middle of the field to "take it to the sideline." He is emotional, but still thinking about how to help the entire program celebrate.

Also, note how excited JP is. I think we underappreciate how much he cares. JP is the one who was "sold" on CPR, probably largely because he recognized how much he cares.
 
I agree, that's a great speech. CPR is a guy that I believe when he says he's more than a football coach. I believe that he is doing his best to prepare these men for the real world and to be successful in life. I hear coaches say that and for whatever reason I have a hard time believing them the majority of the time. Not CPR! I believe him and you can just feel the passion he has for the game and for each relationship he forms with each of his players...What a great coach and even better man!

Wow. Thanks for posting this. It was a great way to enjoy Thanksgiving morning.

A few special notes:

Geoffrey. I sure hope that the new president follows through on GG's leadership. His description of CPR was spot-on. Everything CPR has done so far is consistent with the introduction given by GG.

Pollard. I don't think most of us give enough credit to JP for caring. Much like CPR, he really seems to care about the program, not just his own big salary and cushy job. A neighbor of his tells me that he jsut keeps adding ISU decorations to his house.

Rhoads. He introduced the "I'm proud" theme less than a minute into his first speech. And he ended with it.

I was also impressed with how serious he was in the speech. It wasn't just a bunch of optimism and platitudes. He accomplished things in the speech, such as telling the commits that their decisions just became better decisions (because of his hiring!).

He even wore an ISU hat while giving the speech (note that he took it off right after the speech). He presented himself as looking like a coach, not a desk jockey, even though he was wearing a suit. He was speaking right to the players, recruits, and Cyclone Nation as the ISU coach!
 
Looking back on it I feel so stupid with my reaction when we hired Rhoads. I couldn't believe we hired some nobody.

I couldn't be more proud now to have Paul Rhoads as the Iowa State coach.

And in his final statement in his first press conference, he definitely brought pride back to Iowa State University.

A "nobody" huh ;) Well he didn't have any head coaching experience but from what I read was an excellent recruiter and a pretty good d coordinator. But great to see he has exceeded all of our expectations and he is only just beginning.

As a group, we were underwhelmed when his name leaked out. Then people started researching into his background after ISU, and some started posting videos of his talking football as a coordinator. The idea (that was already a done deal for GG/JP) started gaining momentum here while we looked at that.

Then he had his press conference, and redid it at the basketball game that night. I remember hearing those three main points at the basketball game and being sold right there.

I think it only took that first day to start calling him CPR. It was a lot better than discussing another great defensive performance under Chizik and Bolt. Hope started to rear its head, we all started getting excited, and then his teams performed on the field.

It is kind of fun to think back on that time. We were all (generally) so ticked off the way Chizik left and the condition he left ISU in (at least in his record). The consensus seemed to be "Who can we actually get here now?" It turns out we did OK.

I remember having a "who?" reaction. However, I also remember fans rallying around the "hit them coming off the bus" line. We have to give JP credit, he found the right guy.
 
Home run all the way. I was on the Gill bandwagon, but had him and some other Cyclones in the back of my mind. I followed him a bit after he left for Pitt. I feel soooo lucky we have Jamie Pollard here and Dr. Greg Geoffrey. I could not be prouder.

I figured looking back at CPR's introduction and bowl speech, this video would fit nicely. Always great to watch and applicable because we are bowling again!
