I thought Damon, Hathaway, Holland all did a fine job but man the supporting cast was incredible. The Circe actress was 100% perfect choice.
and she looks different in everything she does. she's the main female cog in Minority Report. Oscar nominated twice. And most people don't know who she is.
At the cast and crew premiere of the movie, she got only the second extended standing ovation in the history of Nolan movies. Only other time it happened was Ledger.
Nolan had wanted to work with her for years. Picked a great role for her no doubt.
I am looking forward to more Himesh Patel movies too. I thought he was great as well.
Agreed. He was really good in this. I was trying to think what I remembered him from and looked him up. Turns out he was in Yesterday and Station Eleven. Both things I enjoyed as well.
I went in semi-blind enough thinking Zendaya was going to be Circe.
So I got to be surprised alongside Odysseus and his crew!
Never thought we'd see some Cronenberg-style body horror in a Nolan film... but oh boy did we.
He's also in the new X: Files reboot being put together by Chris Carter (original creator) and Ryan Coogler (Sinners creator/director).
I kept thinking he'd be great in espionage type films....Bond, Mission Impossible, etc.
Im cautiously excited for that show. I love the X-Files and I hope they do it justice.
There were 3 or 4 scenes that were obnoxiously loud and literally painful. It can be very distressing. The boat storm scene was especially bad.
I agree with your wife. It seemed like Holland made a conscious decision to play it lame, but I thought it came off as just bad acting. Leguizamo was one of the only characters I cared about.
I enjoyed the movie. My wife said she almost cried, but I never got close to feeling anything like that. We spend a lot of time with Odysseus' men, but we learn almost nothing about any of them. I haven't read the book in decades, so maybe that's not part of the story. But it's hard to get invested in the story when half of the movie is spent with people we don't care about.
We don't get deep character studies of the men for the exact same reason we don't get the swaggering, infallible hero in the first two acts; it's all filtered through Odysseus's guilt-ridden memory.
To a commander drowning in survivor's guilt who blames himself for every single death, his crew aren't distinct individuals with fleshed-out arcs, they are a collective mass of ghosts he failed. They are just faces he couldn't save, blending together in a blur of collateral damage. You aren't supposed to deeply bond with them individually because Odysseus is remembering his own catastrophic failure, not writing an ensemble-cast biography.
Odysseus' crew is not particularly developed in the Homer either.
One thing Oh Brother, Where Art Thou? changed (and perhaps improved) on this front –
The crew is condensed down to two companions.
And they're both well-developed as characters and well-played.
Tim Blake Nelson as Delmar and John Turturro as Pete give great performances alongside Clooney.
