Tell me about Carroll

Ok, I've lived in the Carroll 'area' most of my life. I currently live in Glidden, 7 miles east. Ozzy's is a shell of the club it was even 3 years ago, there are nights w/o dancers. Bloomers has the most overrated food in town, the beer is cold, but the food is bad. Not hating, just true. The best thing to happen on the restaurant front in Carroll in the last few years was Charlies steak house & Santa Maria Vineyard. Before those places opened the best steak in town was at the bar attached to the strip club. The bar scene is your typical small town scene, Pirahna club it's separated from ozzy's with a door. It's the bar that nothing happens at on the weekends till after 11. Kerps and B&S's are the other two places to go in town, typical click bars. Wear your affliction gear and act like a hard *** and you'll fit right in. As far as the fast food we have it, the joke in town is if you want mexican or pizza Carroll's got all you can handle. Some of the best bars to just hang out at, have a few brews and stay out of trouble are in the small surrounding towns. As far as apartments, stay as far away from fairview apartments as possible, they're called the barracks for a reason. That goes for pretty much any of the apartments in the vicinity of 18th and Grant Road. Anything owned by Claire Otto in Carroll is a slumlot, stay away. There are some nice apartments just N. of Fareway.

Just my opinions, but more people will agree with my assessment than disagree, if they actually know the area. It is a very nice clean small city and a good place to raise a family, but don't get to caught up in the "Carroll is the greatest town in Iowa" hype. Oh ya, make sure you have a good radio antenna, or a deep music library. The radio stations in town suck ***.

We really haven't covered Lois Feldman. Is she still married? Does the family all still live in Carroll? I can't imagine life for any of her children attending school in Carroll has been a picnic the last three years

Have people actually said this before without cracking up afterwards?

Thanks everyone! I was basically just wondering about places to live and what there is to do for a 21 year old bachelor. It seemed like a pretty decent town when I was there for my interview and I haven't really heard anything bad yet. I grew up in a small farming town and will be working in agriculture so it sounds like a place I may fit in fairly well.

Based on your background, I think you will really like it. I grew up and went to high school there. I loved it growing up but needed a bigger city after college. I still go back frequently though. I don't have much advice on where to live, but there are a ton of trains that go through the south side of town each day so if you like quiet, I would avoid that area.

I loving going back to Carroll, great bars, great people. You will be spending lots of time at Ossy's. The Mexican restaurant by the Movie Theater is great. Also, you might want to think about finding a nice, hot, piece of arse to spend the time banging away.

Ahhhhh, not sure who Julie Adams is, but Lois Feldman is the bathromom culprit. Hawk Fan Says Bathroom Sex Scandal Ruined My Life

(My in-laws are from Carroll County and my husband and I lived outside of town for ~7 years. There are worse places to live, so for the most part it's not bad. The hometown crowd can be really self serving, younjust have to figure out how to deal with it.)

Admittedly, this is news as old as dirt, but I read that article again:

Feldman said her husband, Kelly, has been supportive. She said he faults himself for not going with her when she left her seat to use the restroom before halftime.

Umm...I have been married for nearly a decade, and never have I thought...hmm, she's going to the bathroom, and she's really drunk...should I go with just to make sure she doesn't meet a stranger and grab a quickie in the stalls... It wasn't a you problem, it was a her problem.

Moving there from the Twin Cities, I was not a fan. We had a young family and at that time not many other people I met were stay-at-home-moms (which I was). It was hard to meet people if you hadn't grown up there or if you weren't a member of the country club. Granted my experience is fom the point of view from a young family, not a single guy. And things have changed some since we moved 5+ years ago, but I wouldn't ever move back there.

Lived there a couple years. Rec center is pretty cheap and nice. Has a nice bike trail that goes up to Lake View. Apartments behind softball field are decent and a short walk to Ossy's.

I didn't want to go there with my post, but this is the truest thing in this thread. You don't want to be a married outsider moving into town unless you have a prominent position in one of the bigger companies. Younger guy won't have any problems making friends, but you hit the nail on the head.

Its prob tied for the nicest town in SWI with Atlantic, biggest town around. Halfway to Des Moines and Omaha. No problems.

Atlantic? Maybe Harlan but I've never heard this about Atlantic.

As for descent size towns in SWI though, stay away from Denison or Audubon...
