tasty CMC anecdote

Yeah, a bowl game is the first big step. Expectations rise, though. They did for CPR, didn't they? Fans always want more, after the first hurdle is behind them. I'll bet we're no different. We'll see.

Yea but did expectations really rise? If anything they got lower and lower each of the last 3 seasons, heck you had people that would've been happy with a 5 win season last year. It's not like CPR went to lower tier bowls every year but never got over the hump. CPR's expectations were really low, he managed to not meet even those low expectations. His failure had nothing to do with expectations, it was that after he cleared the first hurdle, he wasn't able to clear it again. The only expectation the fans had for CPR was to maintain the success he had early on, if ANY one of the last 3 seasons would have been a 6-6 team that went to a crappy bowl, he'd still be the HC.

My source is having a ******* clue about how the world works.

I guess you should all go ahead with the belief that your coach was offered 3 different P5 jobs (I will no longer say "standing offers" because the OP has already backed down from his opening post) and turned them down due to the specialness of ISU.

Given the OP is already changing his tune, we can't believe anything happened.

i'm not changing my tune. 3 offers. 3 standing offers. who the hell cares what semantics you use. the point is he chose isu.

ICHawk it is not hard to believe behind the scenes coaches would be let know a job is basically theirs if they want it. They have agents and ADs have "people" so there is no official "standing offer" to embarrass a university when they are turned down. Coaching isn't like most jobs, your performance is out in the open for all to see. An AD could easily decide he wants a coach he has never met or interviewed. I don't know or care if this is true, but it is certainly plausible. You are the one coming off poorly in this "argument"

Did CMC even have an offer from Iowa State when he took the job? I seem to recall JP saying that they just shook hands . . . hadn't even talked money yet.

Don't bring facts into this. Let these bozos have their moment. Offers are only in writing lmfao

They just walked up to each other, shook hands and knew it was all over?

Yes, I believe so. Three bowl invitations in his first four seasons, fans raised a loud clamor, iirc, for JP to lock in CPR to a long-term contract before he was lured away. Then it collapsed, but fans probably remember the latter pain more sharply than earlier joys.

Forget what the op or anybody else has said in this thread and answer me this. Do you think Campbell is a good enough coach that 3 other P5 schools would offer him a HC job?

Facts? LOL. No way, no how was an offer given to CMC verbally, written, or even in Morris code BEFORE HE EVER INTERVIEWED FOR A JOB. Jamie Pollard did NOT OFFER CMC A JOB BEFORE HE INTERVIEWED HIM. The only job he interviewed for was ISU, and he was then offered the job.

If you think AD's are throwing out job offers before even talking to a coach, you are in freaking la la land.

Obviously he hasnt even been for his first game, but so far very glad he is our coach. Seems like a perfect fit for all parties involved.

I hope all the coaches create a winning culture where kids thrive off success, teamwork, and hard work. I hope the coaches create a special environment that high school students will want to ve a part of and where transfers will want to go to. I hope they soldify and unify our fan base.

The teams beeds 6 wins a season and he will have amazing support for the cyclone nation!

Sure, recall if you will that an unusually high number of coaching openings flowered this off season. Sound coaches were at a premium, several P5 programs seemingly had to settle for in-house assistants hired for short contracts. Right? Wasn't the Illini coach one of these.

Matt Campbell has a very fine reputation. In such a buyer's environment (or do I mean seller's market?), why wouldn't he be seen as one of the best available up-and-comers in the business?

Anybody not blinded by bias would agree and that's why I laid it out nice and simple for our hawk friend. Just want him to admit that semantics have nothing to do with it and his opinion on this topic means nothing because he's going to talk **** no matter what.

LOL. Are some of you guys serious? You really think some AD is gonna just offer someone a 2-4 million dollar contract to run a multi million dollar football program that depends almost solely on said football programs success without ever even interviewing them?

Hey! The man said "standing offer". It's like All You Can Eat. If the sign says All You Can Eat then it's all you can eat!

This thread is funny

Absolutely. I'll bet there were a half dozen teams that were ready to make an offer to him. JP just beat them to it. Campbell was a very hot commodity when we snagged him.

Oops, didn't mean to step in if you were directing your comment to, ah, to, that guy, what's his name.

Tell us more about this Morris code.
