Survivor 47

Good for Rachel. Sam outworked her at final council, she should have gone right back at his whole thing about "navigating the game without the luxury of an immunity idol" with "yeah you did that because you had to because you couldn't beat me, you would've traded for it every time" but, still glad she won. She earned it.

With that fire challenge I’m not sure why u thought it was a boring ending
As soon as she won final immunity, it was over. Wanted Sam to win and then put himself in the fire challenge against Rachel knowing that’s the only way to beat her.

The fire challenge was great but big picture the game was already over.

I'm surprised Sue didn't get a single vote.

Always kills me at the final tribal. It’s always two deserving players and the one they brought to the end that has no chance. They were not even asking Sue questions at the end. Just Rachael and Sam. Also, that one vote Sam got earned him like an extra 50k or so for getting second place instead of third

Rachel deserved to win but Sam put up a great fight, I actually thought he earned more than just one jury vote. His acting ability was key to several moves in the game and I wish he would have highlighted that to the jury.

Holy fire making!! When that gust of wind knocked Teeny’s flame sideways, it could only have been the Survivor gods. Thankful that made for an epic showdown and Sam made Final Tribal at least kind of interesting. He very much deserved 2nd place and I like that Kyle’s vote sent Sue to 3rd.

Has the “big” age reveal ever really mattered? As my wife pointed out, it was ironic that Sue’s pitch was about being honest and also lying about her age.

other random thoughts:
- nice to have some people that I enjoyed rooting against (Rome, Teeny, Andy for the first 90% of his game)

- as much as I disliked Teeny, I appreciate that she finally owned her dislike for Sam as driven by stereotypes from her childhood and nothing to do with him as a person

- wild that Sue called Rachel "what's her name" a few weeks ago and by the end they seemed to consider themselves close allies? "What's her name" was my biggest laugh of the season. You've lived in the same camp as this person for several days and they're one of the ~6 people still there. Absolutely absurd

- the puzzles have outsized impact in immunity challenges. It's the final of like 5 legs in the challenge, but carries more like 75% of the weight in deciding the winner. I'm kinda making that number up but you get the idea. Maybe a wrinkle to add would be that if you finish 2nd in the physical portion you have a certain delay between getting to the puzzle and actually starting it... 3rd place a longer delay, and on and on.

- is there a fix to the 3rd place goat?? According to wikipedia the third place finisher has received a vote one time in the past 17 seasons. I don't understand why that person is there, and it's brutal for Sue to sit there as a 'finalist' while everyone silently agrees it's not even worth asking her some of the questions

Glad to see a jury get it right for the first time in awhile now! I was a little worried Sam might pull this one out after that fire challenge and how he was working the jury with his own underdog story. Felt like he was trying to take that angle away from Rachel and have the jury focus on her immunity challenge wins and advantage plays as the only way she was able to get to the end but she did a good job defending that game especially about how she had to play the idol when she did else she'd be going home. She did what many before he have failed to do which was keep the idol a secret as long as possible then play it at the right time. The only reason she even told Sue was to get her to stop looking for one so it didn't put a target on her back too and make them want to split votes or something was my thought. Sam's only chance at winning would have been to win immunity then beat Rachel in fire making and seeing how bad he struggled practicing it at first I am not certain he would have done that. He was getting whupped by Teeny before the wind messed with her's. Almost wondered if she would of stood up and tried to block the wind a bit if that might of kept her fire straight long enough to win.

I haven't watched the after show part yet, will tomorrow night as my kids have been into Survivor now for a few seasons so we only watch the show with them so we ran out of time tonight to finish it. I will say it was nice to have a different final immunity challenge and the challenges in general this season were a little less predictable and more diverse I thought. It had got to the point they were showing clips of cast members after they won a challenge showing them practicing the same one at home or saying they had. Felt like the cast this season just right as there was a lot of good gameplay and none of the social issue crap that tainted some the seasons after 40 where it was more about social issues outside that game than the game of Survivor itself that created the drama. This year it was just players getting back to the basics of playing the game and leaving that crap out of it and a jury that didn't pick a winner because of some stupid reason over someone that actually played the best game. Hoping a few of these players are on another season at some point because I think a few of them could get a long ways into the game if given another chance to play. This was by far the best season since season 40. Maybe not one of the best all time but definitely the best since the epic all winners season of season 40.

I finally just got caught up and watched the last few episodes yesterday and agree with everyone’s assessments.

At first, I felt bad for Teeny with the wind but quickly realized she was going to get zero votes so it didn’t really matter if she beat Sam. Was she on the right side or aware of anything that was going down all season?? I thought Sue might get a vote from someone just for playing a loyalty/social game but these juries seem to value blindsides and big moves and not blending in to make it to the finals.

All in all, it was a really good season.
