Stop!

I'll admit I yelled stop shooting twice yesterday at BRE into the TV. Rewatched this morning and saw he had some nice plays. I think the big issue with Jones is his bad plays look like someone that shouldn't be playing BB let alone D1 power conference.

I think we can all appreciate what Jones brings to the game with hustle, desire and effort, but we also see him trying to over help too much on defense, leaving easy shots for the other team. His offensive moves around the board are below average for a power 5 post player and his free throw shooting form and accuracy is truly middle school level. Now I am sure the staff is working with him to correct his problems, but for whatever reason it's not improving. Never saw a player that basically stood straight up and is moving backward on the release become a good free throw shooter, which is what Jones does every time he shoots one.

Love his hustle and desire, decent rebounder, but his minutes need to go down with Jaz back on the team.

Did you pick on other ISU centers from the past who shot worse than Jones?
You have to go back to 2018 with Hans Brase to find similar numbers and I don’t think many were praising him. You have to go pre-Hoiberg era to find someone before Hans.

This makes me wonder if he's told to put those shots up, almost no matter what. He's almost always double teamed and well defended.

Every game we are all thinking, probably should pass it out, and he goes up with it instead.

Is that what he's told to do?

Great point. If he was so consistently doing something he wasn’t supposed to, you’d think the minutes would vanish. I’m certain the staff has better data about expected outcomes (basket, foul, and-1, offensive rebound, defensive rebound, turnover) than the guesses on this board. I’d certainly believe they are better than we perceive.

Was he a 5? I seem to remember him having a decent outside shot, but not much inside. Sort of like a Euro player.

And didn't he have bad knee's and could hardly jump over a piece of paper?

Look around the conference and find a post player that plays at least 10 minutes a game that shoots worse than Jones. Most guys in the post have a pretty high percentage. I will give Rob credit for one thing, he isn't out there jacking up 3s.

He is the garbage guy that every team needs to be successful. Does a lot of the little things that you don’t see on a stat sheet.

That being said, he shouldn’t be getting as many shots as he does.
I think this is probably where I stand. I think he should be right at 10 MPG and when he’s in he needs to play with his hair on fire and shots should be limited to easy layups and putbacks. But the amount of times we run our offense through him is just mind boggling

No but many of Prohms teams didn’t have a true 5

the bunny missing is frustrating, especially in crucial situations. That point blank miss near the end of the Tech game probably would have ended it. But of course others certainly contributed to us blowing it as well. I love his energy and effort, but he does need to play with a higher BB IQ at times. He needs to be more discriminate when he gets the ball. There are times when he starts operating towards the hoop looking to score, where really he should pass it back out. At KU for example, he was 1/8, most of them trying to make a post move, most of the time it just wasn't there. I think he is improving in his decision making in this area so that is a positive. I thought he played great against KU. He struggled on defense against Tech, but I don't blame him one bit, he was put in a terrible situation when they went small ball. I put that on TJ, he should have countered Tech on that and didn't.
