So my family has a Christmas Day tradition where once the kids open their presents we turn the Star Wars movies on all day. This will be the first viewing party with Rogue One, and I was trying to figure out how long this marathon would be - and I stumbled on the "Star Wars Machete Order"
Apparently, this was figured out by a blogger back in 2011 to watch Star Wars in a way that makes sense to viewers. Rather than watch the films in numerical order, this blogger recommends watching the films in the following order:
Star Wars: A New Hope
Empire
Attack of the Clones
Revenge of the Sith
Return of the Jedi
Phantom Menace is completely bypassed because, according to the originator of the Machete Order:
"The opening crawl of Episode II establishes everything you need to know about the prequels: a bunch of systems want to leave the Republic, they are led by Count Dooku, and Senator Amidala is a senator who is going to vote on whether the Republic is going to create an army," the post asserts.
There are several advantages to starting at Episode II, Hilton says -- including the removal of confusing and unnecessary subplots -- and one's a big one.
Skipping Episode I means "Virtually no Jar-Jar (Binks). Jar-Jar has about 5 lines in Episode II, and zero in Episode III."

The benefits of starting with A New Hope is that it kicks-off Luke's story, then moves logically to the big reveal at the end of Empire, and then go back to Ep 2 to learn more about Anakin's backstory, and then see how both stories come together in Return of the Jedi.
The updated Machete Order is now:
Rogue One
A New Hope
Empire
Attack of the Clones
Revenge of the Sith
Return of the Jedi
Force Awakens
This takes slightly less than 15-1/2 hours to complete

There is another marathon list called the "Optimal Star Wars Order" that includes watching The Clone Wars stand alone movie in between Attack of the Clones and Revenge of the Sith.
TL/DR but I thought it was worth sharing for those of you that may be looking to re-watch the films before seeing The Last Jedi this week.
