Standing for the Whole Game

WHY did they put bleachers in the stadium anyway? Next time I go to the movies, I think I will stand.

I don't have a problem with people sitting. I was just turning his logic around on him. I'm gonna stand during the game, and i won't be happy when people tell me to sit down because they can't see. They can move if they can't see. I have never been to a game that didn't have open seat within 20-30 feet of where i was sitting.

Change the lower level to the true fans who want to stand, jump, scream, and do whatever to support their team. Then move all the whiny old farts who have nothing better to do besides ***** and aren't smart enough to watch it on TV or get a feed on the computer and hook it to the TV up to the top level where they should be able to see over the true fans. Problem solved. Oh and for the one who actually want to stand and cheer the tickets should be cheaper.

Wow. Lots of passion in this discussion.

Standing for the entire length of a game when people around you are asking you to sit down makes you a jerk (unless you're in the student section).

Sitting for the length of a game doesn't make someone any less of a fan. Some people choose to enjoy the game sitting down. Not everyone is a stand until your legs fail, and scream until you're hoarse type of fan. While you may not like it, you should at least respect it.

And don't tell me they shouldn't be at the game if that's the way they want to watch. Last time I checked we could use the fans in the stands. A quiet, sitting fan is still a million times better than an empty seat. As long as they're a Cyclone fan and supporting the team in their own way, why ruin the experience for them and drive them away?

If it bothers the people around you, be respectful and stick to standing when the occasion calls for it.

You know, I agree with that. I stand for a majority of the game, but try to be respectful and sit for some stretches when ISU is on offense (except for third downs) and during timeouts. If the people behind me are sitting the entire game, I at least hunch over for a good part of the game or slide over a litte so they can see over or around me.

I'm not going to get mad and tell someone in front of me to sit down, though. ISU needs more fans into the game. I also disagree with the thought that a continuously loud crowd ruins the 12th man effect. I'd like to see JTS loud and then get louder for key plays...not quiet and then loud for key plays.

People can't move just because they can't see. It is reserved seating where I sit. I don't have a problem with people standing and cheering during key plays and drives. NO problem. But to insist on standing the whole game is just plain rude. It makes NO sense. And your insistence on standing has more to do with your childlike selfish mentality than anything else. Grow up. People pay big money to watch the game. If you truly were a Cyclone fan you would accommodate them so they can see so they will support the team.

Many of the bigger supporters of Cyclone athletics are older people that can't really stand on their feet for an entire game. And it is their donations that make it possible for the facilities to be continually upgraded.

I will say that last night our section was pretty good. At times they stood and at times they sat. I have no problem with that. During the times people stood were during key offensive plays and defensive stands. That IS part of the game. But the suggestion by some to stand the WHOLE game is completely ********.

Yeah that is ridiculous, lets be quiet the whole game and then get really loud on 3rd and 4th down. That will really intimidate the opposition. :skeptical: Be loud and get really loud when it matters most.

Is this necessary? When did i personally attack someone? Also, i didnt say i wont sit down, i said i won't be happy about it. And i've sat in reserved seating all the time (with hillside tickets) and have been asked to move once. I have zero problem with that.

PS. if i'm the only one standing in a section then i'll sit down, i'm not an ***, but it still frustrates me. Now if it's a big play and people don't want to stand, that's too damn bad, ill take all the criticism they can dish out in that situation (this has happened at the Army game last year).

Let's just simplify this. Everyone (students too) sit down. We have now placed a 3 inch rectal electric probe that you must sit on during the game. A moderate charge will be applied throughout the entire stadium so we all know when to stand and yell as one!

I can't believe there are 8 pages of posts on this stupid subject, yet, here I am posting. I simply stand when I feel like it, usually in a third down critical situation, and sit when I feel like it. If fans in front of me are standing, I don't care either way, I then stand long enough to see the next play, then sit if I feel the need.

Move on.

What started as a great student effort to support their team has gone too far. However, it now seems that people all over the stadium are standing through the whole game. And they look at folks who don't as if we aren't supporting the team.

Well, my feet hurt when I stand for long periods of time. Further, I actually like it when something like a key third down brings the fans to their feet. It was our football sense of how to act as a crowd in these situations to help our team that previously distinguished us as a well-educated fanbase.

Maybe we should sell "standing" tickets and "seats."

Man, do I sound old, but my feet hurt!

This should be good. Personally, I like to stand for most if not all of the game. I got a little pissy with an older guy at the Insight Bowl last year because he wanted me to sit down. I was more than a little drunk so I probably overreacted. Fortunately my buddy calmed me down before I did something stupid. But I now understand there are those that don't want to or can't stand the whole game.
Not sure how we could possibly resolve it. No way we could have standing and sitting sections.
Why not? I have been advocating for separate "standing encouraged" sections for years now. I don't know of any reason why it couldn't be done.

I am definitely one of those people who would rather stand the whole game. I would do my best to sneak into the student sections after I graduated so that I could do so, but that was not always possible, especially in basketball.

I notice lots of people saying they go to the games to "watch the game." That can be done by watching TV, often better than by attending the game. I went to the games for the game experience. The rush of thousands of people standing, cheering at the top of their lungs, and trying to will the team to victory. That experience suffered big-time in my opinion when I found myself seated in the non-student sections. The angriest I think I ever got was when I moved to the upper-level student section at a basketball game so that I wouldn't feel bad about standing and some old guy who obviously also moved there to get a better seat told me to sit down. I did not sit.

It is understandable that some people physically would not be able to stand the whole game though. For them the game experience is diminished if they can't see. Having separate standing encouraged sections would be the best way to ensure that everyone has a good time.

I also have to say that I disagree with the people who think that standing the whole game diminishes the value of the times when the crowd would otherwise stand and be really loud. I suspect it would be much more effective to be loud all the time and really loud some of the time. Image if the student section only stood up on third and fourth downs or during the last three minutes of a basketball game. Would the atmosphere be better? I think not.

Exactly.

My other favorite thing in this thread is how somehow those who stand the entire game are equated with being the loudest. Thats not true. Many of the sitting sections will be just as loud, and many of those standing in the 'standing sections' are only standing because they have to to have any chance of seeing the game (or are starting the wave or having a towel fight instead of watching the game at all). Standing does not all of a sudden make a crowd louder, though it may make it quieter as less people come to the game because they cant see whats going on because of the people standing in front of them.

A thought, and im no stadium engineer, but id bet sight lines are designed from the sitting perspective, otherwise we'd have more vertical difference in between rows to accomodate seeing better while standing. In this case, this is why sitting is the 'default' position, and if you're blocking someone's view the whole game *you* are the one in the wrong.

The bolded statement is false.

The bolded statement is false.

How is that? Just because you stand doesnt mean youre loud. A lot of those standing the whole game are doing just that. Theyre no louder than the others that will be jumping up for big plays etc. Are there those in the predominantly sitting sections that dont stand and cheer at all? Yes. Are there those in the 'standing sections' that are quiet too? Absolutely.

Sounds like it is illegal to have fun at a game. I mean throwing towels at your friends and fellow students is "not paying attention to the game" which is the ONLY reason we came. Forget the atmosphere, or being with friends. All attention must be on the field.
Cmon...talk about fun police. You just lost all credibility with me. News flash not everyone is there to watch the game EXCLUSIVELY.

I bet you enjoy the Cyclone Power chants. Guess what I bet everyone doesn't do it because it psyches out the opponents. I think it sounds awesome just to hear that many people in unison.
