posted on twitter, but maybe worth a thread. we don't have a named ST teams coach again this season correct? "team effort" or whatever?

I know the guy they hired as a ST consultant in 2023 apparently wasn't thought much of, but dang, clearly the best ST season in a long time. Kinda have to expect we stay a middling to bad ST unit this season based on past performance ...

We have Rory Walling. That has to help!

I don’t know…ST usually comes down to having a good punter and kicker, which we have. And then coverage and protection. We have a veteran OL which means there are likely pretty good guys behind them for ST units. And, we are incredibly deep at LB, which will help for coverage. The only thing left is scheme, and I don’t think it takes a rocket scientist to scheme up ST if you have the players.

I’m kinda lost here.

I can nt make out much of the graphic, but don’t know what it has to doneithbST.

When I went back to look at ST stats from ‘23 and ‘24, I noticed two significant differences. One was that placekicking was better in ‘23, and that’s explainable by a senior versus a freshman kicker—and those bad snaps, before they changed the snapper.

The other difference is that ‘24 Noel was hugely better than ‘23 Noel at punt returns.

So, the two differences cancel each other out.

What am I missing?

I thought our special teams were significantly better last year and Hank Poteat was given credit for a lot of the improvement.

Grande has run the special teams for a few years now. He and Walling. While Grande is listed as a “consultant,” he’s very hands on with the specialists. And I’ve heard he’s an absolute jackwagon to the guys

Wasn’t he the one that CMC absolutely lambasted on live TV during the Iowa game last year?

I’ve heard rumors of that as well. Kind of surprising Campbell keeps him around.

Last year Roughly 15% of plays are ST, 39% are O, 46% are D. 11 wins
2023 was 15% ST, 46% O, 39% D. 4 wins

so more defensive plays means more wins? that is counterintuitive.

ST has fewer plays/game so maybe MC thinks it is not as important.

out of 134 teams, ISU ranks 83 in the last 8 years at ST (according to attachment in post#9).
