Something is missing

We're fine nothing is missing. Played two pretty solid games on the road against quality opponents. The train is just picking up speed for March, no worries.

I feel like most people on here don't watch college basketball outside of our games. Kansas got blown out by Temple, Wisconsin loses to Rutgers, Duke drops two in a row while getting blown out at home to Miami, etc. We just split a tough two game road series...all is well

Yes, and the 1997 Bulls - er, Kentucky - should have lost 2 games last week to teams that are unlikely to be dancing in March. Is our team humming along perfectly right now? Not even close. But nobody else is either. And if we do figure it out, watch out, because even with our issues we came within a whisker of sweeping a very tough road trip.

Doesn't mean ISU isn't missing a beat on offense.

We had some struggles last year as well. Niang had a similar slump. We tend to remember the good performances more readily than the bad performances. We lost six big 12 road games last year.

His slump last year wasn't this bad.

What's missing...........fans who realize that no matter how good you are, losing by one on the road to a rated conference foe will happen from time to time.

Well said. Our weaknesses...defensive rebounding, free throw shooting, and 10 minute backup pt. guard play to spell Monte. Wins will be well earned and losses tough to take. But we must be proud of this team and program. I remember too well when selection Sunday sucked. BEAT KU!!!!!

Consistency what's missing. Free throws being the obvious example. Its the only aspect of the game that never changes yet out FT percentages vary greatly.

This team is not supposed to be at their best yet. They are in a similar spot, if not ahead of past teams. I know this year's goal is to win the conference, instead of 3rd or 4th, but that is still attainable. A win this Saturday's game will go a long ways.

Dont we lead the conference in Defensive Rebounding?

In conference play I am not sure we are missing anything. I think we play in a conference that has really good coaches and they see Fred's offensive system as a problem to solve. They have to, they play us at least twice a year. They are trying things to take us out of our game and make us uncomfortable. I think we are adjusting pretty well, it just makes the game look different than last year.

Didn't play particularly well against a ranked team on the road, and somehow had a lead with five seconds left... after beating a ranked team on the road.... does there really need to be something wrong?
Exactly. Last year's team got clobbered by WV on the road and lost by double digits to BU. Yeah we lost night's game (by one point) but it proved to me ISU is never out of a ball game.

Get KU at home and we be back on track.

The offense runs through Niang, and is keyed by him. When another team can limit him, or he is having an off night (which unfortunately seems to be happening more often) the offense is going to sputter along.

The biggest concern I see though is that this team cannot hit their free throws. To me, that is inexcusable when your coach is Fred Hoiberg. Also, it is a problem that has cost the team a couple of games now (SC and last night). In the last 4 games, ISU has shot on 59.3 percent from the line....but have averaged nearly 23 attempts in those games. Prior to the last 4 games, they were hitting at about a 73% rate. If they had hit anywhere near that rate in the last 4 games, they probably would not have lost the two they lost, and the others may have been easier wins. I think this is a problem that has to be corrected.

I think we don't play for a full 40 minutes. Many players take plays off and we rely to heavily on making jump shots. Stepping on the out of bounds line seems to be a new thing we have picked up along the way. Rebounding has been brutal and our defense is mediocre. I think there is a lot missing.

Well stated, the bar was set higher this year by CFH and rightfully so.

I guess I don't see the sky falling like some do. For comparisons sake, last years team at this point was 15-2, and on our way to being 15-4 after our first 7 conference games. We were ranked #8, lost three in a row, and dropped to #16. We had just lost to two unranked teams on the road in OU and Texas.

If we beat Kansas we are tied with them for first place in the conference having already played two very difficult road games. We haven't had the benefit of playing KSU or TTU or TCU yet. We are going to be just fine.
