Grew up in eastern Iowa calling it pop, but somewhere along the line I graduated to calling it soda. So for the last 15+ years I've been a staunch soda person.

Saying pop makes people sound like either an idiot or a 2 year old. This is the only area in the country where soda is called pop and it makes us look so stupid.

I say "pop" but understand what most everyone else means when they use other terms for the same thing. Not sure why that makes me look stupid.

Just wondering, where did the word "pop" come from? A shortened version of "soda pop"? Or the sound made when you'd open the bottle? Or something else?

According to the "map" linked above you are wrong. The "pop" belt extends from western Pennsylvania to the northwest coast. The south is "Coke" and the Northeast, St Louis area and the southwest including Cali are the "soda" areas.

Being from the Chicago area, I know that it originated around Chicago from the "Hutchinson Stopper." A device used to close a bottle which contained soda. Once the stopper was opened, it created a popping sound. Take a look at the article below. Scroll down to "Soda Pop"

The worst is in southern Illinois where they call it "sodie"

I grew up calling it pop, but when I was around people from all over the US in college I converted to soda

I live in MA and feel self-concious every time I call it pop. But I can't bring myself to call it soda.
