Sleep question

My wife's super power is her ability to sleep. She can go to bed at 8:30, wake up at 7:00, take 3 naps and be back to bed sleeping soundly at 8:30 again. Even more so when she's stressed out. No idea how she does it.

That is my wife as well. Even more so now that she is prego again. If she has nothing to do and lays down on the couch anytime after 8PM she is out. If I didn't wake her up she would sleep until at least 7 or 8 the following morning. Every night.

If I got into a better schedule it would probably help me. Alarm goes off at 6 when the dogs demand to be fed and let out. I lay back in bed after that sometimes fall back asleep sometimes not. MrsWx has an in home day care so she usually gets up and gets ready at 6:40 and I follow her usually getting out of bed for the last time around 7. At my desk by 7:45.

Here is an awesome article about how people used to sleep prior to electricity/cheap candles, and still would if conditions are adjusted - with a longer nighttime, natural pattern is two sleep phases with 1-2 hrs wakefulness in between.

I've read that we used to nap quite a bit too. Similar to what you posted- not so much one long uninterrupted sleep but smaller segments throughout.

I think kids in elementary school is the sweet spot for parental sleep. They sleep through the night and don't have tons of homework and activities.

My high school kids are usually in sports, so they have practice after school. They have AP classes and lots of homework. Even if they just eat dinner after practice and then get right on the homework, they will be up after midnight frequently. Somehow, I can't just bring myself to go to bed until they do. And then I'm up at 6:00 to make sure everyone gets going and fed in the morning. I unintentionally nap on occasion.

This does me no good when I have kids almost high school through preschool. ;) The only sweet spot I had was before #3 & #4 were born; the other 2 were 8 and 6yrs old. Even now at age 4, the youngest is occasionally up in the middle of the night and usually up for good shortly after 6am.

Yep, used to have that problem too. I had a little sleep break between #2 and #3. Have about a 4 year gap there. Mine now range in age from 16-27. That youngest gets to college, I will finally sleep again. Although you still worry even when they are all grown.

Somehow this topic makes me think of National Lampoon excerpt (around 30 seconds) with a nod toward a sample from Beastie Boys (“Mark on the Bus”):

“Mr. Rogers”: I like to get up around 6:30.
Billy the Bassist: That’s insane. You’re stupid.
“Mr. Rogers”: Huh?
Billy the Bassist: You should sleep late, man, it’s just much easier on your constitution.

Helped at a post prom event Saturday night from 11pm to 3:30 am. Got to bed at 4 am up by 6:30am. Felt pretty good, did grab a short 1 hour nap yesterday afternoon. Got to bed last night at 10 and up at 5 this morning. Completely wiped out this morning!! Coffee isn't really helping either. Gonna be a long day!!
