Sideline Rules (in KU/OU game)

Page 72, article 8, B says, "The designated spot shall be 3' wide, with no depth limitation"

Also, article 9, B says, "No opponent of the thrower-in shall have any part of his person over the inside plane of the boundary line"

I think that reference to "3 feet" is referring to the width of the space that an in-bounder has to move. Hence the additional reference to there being no depth limitation (except in this case with the scorer's table and video board creating a depth limitation).

There is no RULE that requires a player be given three feet. It is an option in gyms with limited space outside the sidelines that a referee can ask a defensive player to step back no more than three feet. The only RULE on inbounds for a defender is "The defender may not break the imaginary plane during a throwin. If the defender breaks the imaginary plane during a throwin, the defender’s team will receive a warning. Any subsequent violations will result in a team technical foul. If the defender contacts the ball after breaking the imaginary plane, it is a player technical foul and a team warning will be recorded. If the defender fouls the inbounding player after breaking the imaginary plane, it is an intentional personal foul, and a team warning will be recorded."

gift wrapped win.

Mason did all of those things.

Well, that's definitive. And a game changer.
Except it doesn't show where the ball was at the time. I think Mason jumped to deflect the throw in and came down over the line. So he didn't cross the line while Hield WHILE Hield was attempting to inbounds the ball. Would like to see the full picture including the ball and both players.

So, is this Big12 commissioner official evaluation/apology material or not????

So you are saying he never made contact with the inbounder?

That is the definition of a violation

Yean not sure their is a rule, but standard out of bound is 3 feet. The inbounder should be able to use the out of bounds line as a border to being guarded on the inbounds. But if there isn't sufficient space behind the the line then the ref should require the defender to provide the space on the court. The ref boned that one up, not anyone else.

Edit: Or I could be completely wrong, as there is no mention of the 3 foot wide out of bounds in the rules. Just the restricted area under the baskets. Maybe only a High School rule. But that is how I remember it.

Here is the only relevant rule that I can find:

"No opponent of the thrower-in shall have any part of his person over theinside plane of the boundary line." p. 72 in the link above.

However, I would swear that I've seen refs insist on players giving 3 feet, especially where there isn't room for the in-bounder to step back. And Mason even said he thought it was a rule. I'll bet we get some clarification of that rule this year.

Beware of a Tuco hijack attempt. This is probably going to be a better conversation if the thread doesn't become a bunch of responses to him that eventually become all about him, not the sideline rule or the actual occasion in the game.

I suppose you came up with a narrative as to what happened when Traylor knocked the ball out of the hoop as well. I mean, Hield really put some crazy spin on that ball.

That was goaltend #1. There was another one in the second half that the ball had already touched the glass before it was swatted that the refs missed again. Is goaltending not a reviewable play?

The NCAA MBB full court diagram does indicate that the sideline out of bounds area should be a minimum of 3 feet, but there is no penalty in the rules that I can find for not having 3 feet of space. Also, there don't seem to be any penalties for not having proper court dimensions or markings.

Clear evidence they missed the call here on the in bounds pass.

The goal tending was obvious too...

What's the rule on hitting someone in the face when they are shooting?
Seriously, this is a non issue. There are always calls missed both ways. let's not forget that Hield should be able to pass by around a 5' 10 player. It was a bad pass by Hield and a good play by Mason. It was a great game by both teams. Leave it at that.
