I believe there is likely something to this but no, nothing is salvageable at this point.
It's funny to think back to the "out of gas" threads from a few years ago, the writing was on the wall, we hit a recruiting lull 2/3 years ago and the lack of talent from those classes is emerging. When you look at at team like Iowa, they don't recruit amazing talent, they don't get much better players than we do but thye difference is they get the players they target. We have been scrapping together classes in February (and beyond), taking 3rd and 4th choices, basically getting our pick of the leftovers.
You are not going to hire a new coach mid season, and we know CPR is not going to get this done. Give Mangino the keys and see if he can have a miraculous turn around. I'm sure he can't, and we will end up looking else where at seasons end, but we can at least see if he is the right fit. What's to lose at this point?
MM is part of the problem...our offense under him has been worse....worse folks. For a guy with as much Oline and OC experience and Isu having a veteran oline things should be much better but they are worse since he took over.
As for having him as an interim coach well eithe wsy u can kiss the 2016 class goodbye. No recruit is coming to Isu if they don't know who cosch will be. Plus will be attrition as well. I'm all for firing cpr, I wasnt before but am now, but realize we won't do a thing until at least 2018.
I got roasted just a few short days ago for asking this same question. I honestly don't know if thats the case but its one of the few reasons I could get behind a midseason firing rather than just waiting until the end of the year.

This is bs. I'm tired of hearing this. I've been saying this to my hawk buddies for years and it's bs. There is a fine line between winning and losing a lot of times and Isu is always...always on the other side. Why? The HC. Teams with great leaders who now how to put their team in the right position to make the plays to win almost always are on the right side of winning. CPR is not one of those.

In regards to Mangino succeeding at ISU, he is a better HC than OC. The question was could he add that superior HC ability from the OC position. It was always doubtful.

The talent on the field wasn't the problem last night. There are factors outside a coach's control, but some ha can definitely control. Penalties - Penalties are a reflection of coaching, Bill Snyder's teams go nearly a season with fewer penalties than we had last night. Injuries - Any particular player can go down any time, but we seem to continually have a lineup held together with duct tape and knee braces. Game coaching - the only time the offense played with any tempo was when we were down 10. The rest of the time, we were out there killing time and hoping not to lose. And 7 points is more than three points. We should go for touchdowns. CPR's first couple of years, we were one of the best in the country at Red Zone efficiency. Now we play for field goals. I have confidence in the assistants, just not the head coach.
If Toledo had some receivers who could hang on to the ball, we might have lost by 20.
I can name you programs that can and do win that will fire their coach if they lose to this bunch. If we somehow ambush some team when we get 9 turnovers or influenza breaks out in the opposing teams locker room or such...that coach will be fired for losing to CPR. I do think Texas's talent and the fact that our team will long since given up will lead to a 45 point woodshedding whenwe play them....but say something crazy happens, like Rhoads actually takes the money and resigns. The team rallys and plays their buts off and some competent offensive coaching gives us a win. I assure you, Strong will be met at the Des Moines airport and be given a bus ticket to the city that is not Austin of his choice. Stoops might get fired too if he lost to us this year.
No people where happy with that season. He blew it by having a mess of a team that last 3 years.
