SEC will talk about having its own playoff

It seems like the TV folks would have to see this being a net gain for them. Probably would need to include a "national championship game" between the SEC winner and someone from the other conferences.

That was my first thought when I read this. It makes it sound like they will be looking to add more teams.

Somewhat of what was talked about a year or so ago, the SEC and B1G would add more teams to create super leagues then become self governing, and eliminate the NCAA. At which point they would play for league championship, then have a National Championship between them.

And I thought of this again when Sanky told the ACC that they were willing to agree to the playoff expansion if it happened now, but if they refused it at this time and pushed it off for a couple years like they did, the SEC may not be so agreeable. Meaning They would be setting themselves up for a completely different system. Enter above scenario.

At which point you may see 18-24 teams in the SEC and B1G each. Relegating the rest to a new tier between what is now the P5 and the G5.

Where do we fit in that scenario? Currently I think we are on the outside looking in but could go either way depending how things go the next couple years, and how many teams make it. We are a bubble team so to speak I believe. What would be a major factor is if those leagues keep their current teams, ie. does the B1G keep Rutgers in this scenario or replace them with someone, will they do that, can they do that? etc.

If they were to go to 24 teams...and for some reason Iowa State got invited to join...should they?

If I never saw another SEC game in my life I’m not sure I would even notice. They want to create their own league? Let them. A college football league comprised of Big 12, BIG, ACC, Pac 12 and a few of the G5 outliers would be super fun. There’s millions of college football fans outside of the south. I say we take our ball and go home.

You know, silly me, I kinda thought the regular season already was a sort of “playoff“ to determine who qualified for the postseason. Now the SEC is saying, oh, no, regular season games are just for seeding, they really don’t mean much of anything at all.

We’re just inches away from a world when playoff teams are chosen in the preseason polls and any games between that and the actual “playoff” are just tune-up scrimmages …

I understand what you are saying..but I don't think you can possibly turn that down. In that scenario you are either in or you are out, I think. I dont think being on the outside looking in is the best position. But its all speculation at this point.

This kind of stuff will get eaten up down here in the Bible Belt. I remember in 2012 when UGA fans were clamoring that their close SEC championship loss to Bama was the “real national championship game”. Bama went on to steamroll ND for the title game a few weeks later.

College football fandom is different down here. Much more popular than the NFL. Sure people will watch the Saints or Falcons or Panthers but everyone has a favorite SEC team. Each state has a team or two to rally behind. It’s very tribal. I can’t explain it.

I don’t like it, but the ESPN spin zone juggernaut and the Just Means More machine will still make a lot of money and pull a lot of viewers if they go this route.

With their ego maybe a post Super Bowl game between the SEC champion and the Super Bowl Champion is in order. To crown the best team in the country for sure!

You know, between the two leagues that pay their players beaucoup bucks.

And there's a ton of money in that too.

In fairness, there were a lot of people around here saying the Elite 8 game in Auburn Hills was the "real national champ game" that year...

I hope they do it and it leads to massive chaos.
I’d love to see an SEC playoff where an 11-0 Bama got upset in their opening game vs 7-4 South Carolina …

While other conferences are ditching their divisions in order to avoid a “lesser” team stealing a conference title, the SEC apparently believes their top 8 (or 10, or whatever) teams are all worthy of the national title every year.

I think it depends on what they are doing and the level of opposition against it.

If most of the Big12 (say ISU, OkSt, Tech, KU, Baylor) was included (or somehow a few B1G or ACC teams also), then it's a big enough tent that I think you HAVE to jump in. Pains me to say it, but if you can't beat 'em, join 'em.

At that point you have practically merged the Big12 and SEC. Think how you would have responded to the Big12 and SEC merging, rather than OuT being poached - night and day.

Honestly, from an endowment and academics point of view, ISU is a decent fit for the SEC. Not so much from the athletics or culture standpoint though. But if you got put in a division with Mizzou, Arky, OkSt, KU, etc, then it might feel like a better fit.

I think the only reason you would NOT join, if it was just a couple teams invited, and the B1G (and it's junior partners aka Alliance) were strongly opposed to it - to the point they would essentially blacklist the SEC, then I think you try to avoid the SEC and go with the Alliance. The risk there is you CAN NOT get left outside both groups, so you'd have to go to the Alliance and say "let us in now or we have to go SEC".

I'd like to see the B12 be really clever/aggressive and do the first conference playoff. Say the top 4 go to a playoff in-conference. It'd be some nice add'l TV revenue!

I posted this comment above in the PAC12 thread last Wednesday. I really wish the B12 would be more proactive in this stuff.

I’d watch every second. If we’re being honest the playoffs probably should feature 3 SEC teams most years anyway. Now add OU and Texas to that too

The money will be big. But I don't think ESPN, Fox, etc. are interested in investing BILLIONS on regional football. Maybe if they see it as a path to national interest, but not over the long-haul.

The SEC carries a big stick, so I gotta believe creating an SEC playoff and having writers throw out $100M annual payments/school is to make USC, Oregon, FSU, Clemson realize what they are missing out on. Jump on board or get left behind. IMO the SEC adding OU and Texas is just a bridge to adding Pac12 teams.
