SEC who?

We all know the SEC will have at least 5 teams in the preseason top 25 again, book it.

They probably deserve 5 teams in the top 25, it's the 5 teams in the top 10 that is asinine.

Texas, Georgia, A&M, definitely belong. LSU, Ole Miss, Tenn are dependent on who they get at QB. Alabama will make it on reputation alone but probably shouldn't.

With the playoffs the way they are now........there is no reason to even have rankings.

Duke is interesting here.

I'm 1,000,000% sure they were cheating in the pre-"NL+TP" era just as much as those other three programs. Otherwise I'm supposed to believe that in the era when ~ all the top programs were cheating, the guy who won the most (Krzyzewski) was the one playing by the rules? Right.

However, they are the only "Blue Blood" who has maintained their dominance in this era. What are they doing differently from KU/UK/UNC?
Well for one they play in an ACC that's a shell of it's former self in hoops.

I mean the old Tobacco Road gauntlet had NC, Duke, NC St, and Wake as elite programs. And it was the top conference top to bottom in college hoops most years. Now it's totally top heavy and really bad mid to bottom. Only 4 ACC teams made the NCAA Tourney last year.

does Texas belong in top 10? Talent wise they have spent the most. But Sark hasn’t proven he can win big time games, let alone three in a row.

No conference deserves anything as far as ranking. Sorry, but I can't stand this rhetoric about rankings, especially preseason rankings.

There shouldn't even be preseason rankings to start the year. The play on the field and then something similar to what CBB does (like a NET or kenpom type of analytics) should help determine rankings.

The preseason rankings (human) have been INSANELY bad lately at predicting who will actually be good. IMO - they're pointless (other than the obvious trying overinflate a conference early to help them get more teams in the playoff later). I want to get rid of them. Maybe we shouldn't even start ranking teams until like Week 7, either.

Self needs to move on. become the new college basketball announcer everyone loves
If he does I hope he goes with CBS or TNT, I dislike espn and they aren't good for the sport. Name brand ball games starting late for virtual golf?!?! WTF.

It’s awesome that Oklahoma has become a dumpster fire at the receive position. No high school recruit has lasted two years before they decide to transfer. Venerables has a huge problem at OU.

I’ve told this story before but I was in Gulf Shores, AL over the 4th of July a few years ago and we went to a local place for fireworks.

They had laser lights and were flashing up logos of all of the SEC teams and there was a massive “SEC! SEC! SEC!” Chant happening.

It might have been one of the weirdest moments of my life.
aTm fits right in that conference.

I love these posts. Anybody that knows anything about college basketball knows the great players have been getting paid under the table for 40 years at every school. If you think Tinsley and Fizer only received books, tuition, room & board then you have no idea how it really worked. Even D2 schools were paying their top players. Now some schools had more money to pay and Duke, UK, UNC have Nike helping them out that is a huge advantage. KU and Louisville have Adidas helping them which is a big advantage. Those schools still have those advantages. UK spent 5x what ISU spent on their roster. Maybe they didn't pick the right players, maybe they don't have the right coach, but in the long run they still have that advantage. Now the transfer rule makes a big difference because none of those top schools can stockpile talent anymore, but the money being legal now sure doesn't hurt schools with the most money.
Go back to Kansas Dorothy.

I am just happy they will actually play 9 conference games next year, guaranteeing another loss for 1/2 the conference.

I have no problem saying the SEC is the best football conference. A couple of years without a Natty is more fluke than a shift.
Both preseason and bowl season proved the SEC is definitely not a top conference. The middle/ bottom has always been mushy soft propping up their top teams, they always play more out of conference and weaker out of conference schedules than other conferences, there is no Saban coached team to save their reputation. Their motto of SEC, we just cheat more, no longer works. Funny how they can't win when other conference are allowed to participate based on the eye test. The SEC beat a G5 team other SEC teams and that's it.

Here's a look at this year's AP preseason rankings:

1. Texas
2. Penn St.
3. Ohio St.
4. Clemson
5. Georgia
6. Notre Dame
7. Oregon
8. Alabama

9. LSU
10. Miami
11. Arizona St.
12. Illinois
13. South Carolina
14. Michigan
15. Florida
16. SMU
17. Kansas St.
18. Oklahoma
19. Texas A&M
20. Indiana
21. Mississippi

22. Iowa St.
23. Texas Tech
24. Tennessee
25. Boise St.

The 12 teams in bold actually finished the season ranked in the final CFP rankings. That means 13 teams, over half of the preseason top-25, finished the season unranked. Of special note is the spots from 11-17 with 7 consecutive teams ranked in the preseason that didn't finish ranked.

This is the same preseason poll that's used to determine which teams can take a loss or two and still have their CFP hopes kept alive and which teams cannot take a loss or two and hope to make it into the rankings. Based on nothing more than the biased opinions of a group of chubby dorks in cargo shorts.

The AP preseason poll isn't just bad. It's industry fraud. It needs to go away and the first poll of the season should be put out after week 4.

Despite this 3 year streak, the SEC has still won 6 of the last 10 championships. And feel free to check NFL rosters.

As I stated, I think it is more of a fluke period than a permanent shift. Those predicing the long-term demise of the SEC in football will probably look foolish over the next 5-10 years.

I've never said "demise" I've just said that the SEC's run as the clear #1 conference is over and won't likely come back. On-field results continue to bear that out. SEC teams can no longer stockpile 4 and 5 star guys three deep on their rosters because those guys are now moving on to other schools in other conferences that can pay them and where they'll get onto the field right away.

Not a big disparity when you look at it over the course of the year. Big 12 definitely struggled against SEC, albeit a very limited sample size, but had the best overall record against all power conference foes.

Some of those Championship games were SEC vs SEC based on the eye test. 4 teams in was bad for the SEC. 12 teams is a disaster even though they are given half the spots. Don't buy the hype it was always somewhat of an illusion.
