San Antonio Recommendations

If you and your son like history, a trip to Fredericksburg and Johnson City is a good day long trip. In Fredericksburg see the National Museum of the Pacific. Admiral Nimitz was from Fredericksburg and there is nice museum there. Then head 30 miles east to to LBJ ranch in Johnson City. For a break from the CC in downtown San Antonio a unique place is the Buckhorn Saloon and Museum.

My son and I (age 36) are going to San Antonio for 6 days at the end of February (Commodity Classic). Looking for any CF recommendations. I've been a few times before but didn't make it far past Alamo, Riverwalk and Old Town.
We have 2 free days and a vehicle. Looking for any great food or sites. Also may take a day and try to do some hiking.
LBJ's ranch, excellent wine country (e.g., in Frederickburg), and Luckenbach are a fairly short drive from San Antonio. We signed up for a tour (via van) to take us from downtown hotel to those places. There were two art museums downtown as well. The Palm (old style) restaurant (I think that was the name). The ones along the riverwalk were busy and not as impressive.

Yeah my experience with Riverwalk restaurants in general are cool decor, overpriced drinks, and meh food. We only plan to spend on night there because my son has not done it yet.

One or two nights at most is all you need to see it, we like the Mexican RR along the riverwalk, and be sure and take the boat around to see the entire thing. The riverwalk is a nice safe area that is fun for a day maybe two, and then move on to something else.

Don’t overlook places that are within a few blocks of the Riverwalk as there are some great spots, such as La Panadería Bakery.

The light show at the San Fernando Cathedral is pretty cool. It's free and runs on Tuesdays, Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays at 9, 9:30 and 10. It's Riverwalk adjacent.

The Original Blanco Cafe has some of the best breakfast in the Riverwalk area. They have moved to a new location since I have been there but the reviews look good. Now located at 201 W Commerce.
Thanks for the tip on the light show. IMO it's a hidden gem that does not get much press. For anyone interested its a 20 minute video/music production projected on the front of the church. Recaps local history and events all the way back to the indigenous people.

Been to San Antonio 3 times (all during Commodity Classic) and the Riverwalk this year was by far the most enjoyable. In years past it was a pain to get anywhere but this year you could get in most places and find plenty of seating.
