Rutgers player from Iowa

No problem!

Back in college I had a buddy from the Griswold/Walnut area (sw Iowa) who always claimed that no one could out drink people from southwest Iowa. He eventually set up a case race that pitted two teams (2 guys to a team) from north Iowa v 2 teams from sw Iowa. There were guys from Osage, McIntire, and Elma on the north Iowa team.

It was a landslide victory for north Iowa. Of course, in such a competition the only winners are the spectators.

well that must be where i get it from my dad is an osage/orchard guy

Isn't the Red Man Inn the Madison Square Garden of case race battles?

They've really classed the Red Man up in recent years, but its certainly witnessed its share of power drinking. The Pit Stop (former 312 Club) is the harder partying spot these. Back when meth was real bad (5-6 years ago), the Red Man was the tweaker bar. Then it closed for a couple years and reopened during the windmill boom as a restaurant/bar with more decor, and an add-on into the the old bank next door.

The Pit Stop has been a beacon of stability through of all that, with Libby still offering a good price, stiff drinks, and a great jukebox. All in Iowa's greatest NASCAR bar.

One of the reasons to stick around on the tennis courts was to watch someone from Riceville start something, they were very good at starting and very bad at ending the altercation.

Those of us on the west end of the county have really started to enjoy the Cancer Benefit pool tournament in January and the BBQ Bash in August. Both take place in Carpenter.

Yup. Those were always Howard County kids with a chip on their shoulder against the "rich snobs" from St. Ansgar. Always seemed stupid to me, but it was hilarious to watch.

Didn't the bar in Carpenter burn down a few years back? Did they open it back up?

That would definitely explaining any drinking tendencies you may have.

I see you are a Klosterman fan. In one of his books, he describes Midwestern Power Drinking. He says something like, "you have to move fast, you have to stay focused, and you have to swallow constantly." Good stuff.

Starting a fight in Stacyville cuz you don't like the "rich snobs" from STA. That's some solid logic right there.

This thread is making me homesick - anyone got a link to the article about the guy who took a combine on a drunken joy ride?

I lived in that very area for over a year. Their drinking isn't very impressive.

"Rich Snobs" from St. Ansgar makes me laugh because the fights usually ended up with more osage or stacyville kids in it than anyone else.

The Carpenter Bar and Grill has been reopened for a few years now and is under new management. The place is really nice and has great food. The shrimp are amazing and Ty normally sells out of them on friday nights.

Always good times in the county. Ive enjoyed living here for the majority of my life and its always fun to discuss things with others from the area.

Al-I have so salute you Iowa region and country cultural knowledge. It's amazing really that you have just about every area of Iowa pegged.

That quote used to be my sig line here. Its so true.

Yeah, I never got how some of those Riceville kids saw STA as rich snobs, but whatever. In all fairness, it does seem to be a more affluent town, but the people aren't snobby by any stretch.

Regarding the drunken combine joy ride, a bunch of my buddies sent the link to that story when it happened just sure it was one of my family's combines that had been involved in the whole thing. I went home about 2 days later to help with harvest for a day, and you could see his little path of destruction along the highway just south of McIntire.

Good to hear. A town like Carpenter needs a good tavern and place to grab a bite to eat.

I'm definitely getting homesick as well. If I don't go to the bowl game, I'll be up in Lime Springs (I realize this isn't actually Mitchell County, but close enough) as one of my best friends from back home's band is playing the bar for NYE. They played the night before Thanksgiving and it was a god damn blast.

It's just a product of having friends and family scattered around the state more than anything. A lot of my good buddies from college are from the Lakes area, and I have a few from SW Iowa and Sioux City. My dad went to ISU with a bunch of guys from the rural Iowa City (Kalona) area, and I'm close to their kids too. I grew up in Mitchell County, and my fiance is from farther east of there.

Really, the only parts of the state I haven't just happened to spend time in are south central Iowa and the "Eastern Seabord" of the state.

Way to back up our image everyone. Right now the Rutgers posters are linking to this thread.

You might as well post photos of cornfields and combines.

Hey Al, have you seen the New Jersey map that an RU poster linked to in a thread here?

Since you are our resident Iowa region expert, I think you should be in charge of creating a similar one for Iowa.

That's an interesting idea.

Have you traveled the state much? Iowa is incredibly agricultural. The vast majority of our land is involved in crop production. Rather than running from that agrarian image, we should embrace it.

If they are going to go there, we can go with the following for them:

I concur. I would love to see what Al comes up with. However, we have to be willing to laugh at ourselves.

I guarantee you will get mad rep if you can pull off the map.

I agree, Iowa is still very ag-based.

However, the the DSM metro is much different. A lot of outsiders would probably be surprised with DSM and surrounding suburbs...

and then they'll run into another field! :spinny:

If we can't laugh at ourselves, we have no business making fun of others.

That's something I learned way back and it's specifically true for ISU fans. You can't take things too seriously or you won't last long.

LiveLeak.com - Drunk Combine Joyride

Al, you should be very proud of this!

The story I heard behind that was that the kid was a windmill worker with a pretty troubled background who got real loaded up at the Pit Stop one night, and decided to try and get in trouble so he wouldn't have to go to the Army or something along those lines. Not too sure how much truth there was to that, just what I was told.

Being from the sw ia area I can vouche for nobody being able to drink as much as north ia, specifically NW Iowa.
