I've talked to some people who worked in Eastern Europe and they were amazed at how much hard alcohol is drunk. I don't agree that alchol has caused most of the problems over there, but it certainly doesn't help.

I thought the Germans and Australians drank the most in the world, but perhaps that's simpely beer?

My German teacher last year said there was no drinking age over there.

This is quite understandable. Cheap vodka played a huge factor in the USSR. Keep the people drunk and they won't realize how bad they have it.

We were over in Russia twice 3 years ago to adopt our two boys. Yes it's bad. The first time there was huge news about the crack down on people selling all kinds of chemicals/substances as vodka...and killing those who drank it. This was due to a vodka shortage at the time.

Cheap vodka and smokes were two of the main pillars of Soviet rule. In fact it's a large part of why many want to go back...they didn't really have to 'perform' to keep a job and a house...and they made more than enough money to buy smokes and booze. Now they have to worry about being fired...paying rent cuts into the smokes and booze money.

I talked to a customer that worked for Smith and Wesson as an engineer. After the cold war the Russians came and wanted to start buying ammo from the US. He told me that it was common that they would pour a water glass full of vodka...and it wasn't unusual to see one or two of them passed out in their food before the meal ended.

I know that our interpreter wouldn't drink around us...we told him he could have a beer or something even though he was driving. "I don't want to start as I wouldn't stop".
