Rules question

Meanwhile in phog Allen…

I said this on a thread about three-second calls a few weeks ago: sports are usually better with fewer rules that involve people making judgments.
Personally I think you have to enforce a rule on traveling because dribbling is at the heart of what makes basketball a unique and challenging sport, but once you start getting picky about how someone dribbles, the game becomes much harder to officiate fairly and less fun for fans. So I'm in favor of officials only calling palming when it's very egregious.

I can’t be certain who to credit - I think it was Jalen Rose who said that the NBA figured out that fans were way more interested in seeing cool dunks than traveling calls. For better or worse, that has made it’s way to college, too. My least favorite is when a player is fouled on a drive but the whistle doesn’t blow until the shot doesn’t go in. And yet, it probably makes for better game flow if there are fewer fouls called. I certainly don’t want every 3-second or maybe-carry called.

I agree that calling too much messes up the game and takes away some excitement. There was a play in the Duke/NC game last night where the guy drove, was fouled in the air on a layup, landed on one foot and threw the shot up, went in and got the and one. I understand follow through, but some are getting a little ridiculous.

I'm more annoyed by the whistles that blow in anticipation of contact, but those suck too

When my dad was in the hospital after his bypass surgery, we had someone in his room with him 24x7. I was there at about 11pm and the TV options were limited so I put on an NBA game.
Within 5 minutes my dad, who was not a big sports guy, turns to me and asked "How come they don't call travelling anymore?"
