I said this on a thread about three-second calls a few weeks ago: sports are usually better with fewer rules that involve people making judgments.
Personally I think you have to enforce a rule on traveling because dribbling is at the heart of what makes basketball a unique and challenging sport, but once you start getting picky about how someone dribbles, the game becomes much harder to officiate fairly and less fun for fans. So I'm in favor of officials only calling palming when it's very egregious.
His highlights never get old.
I agree that calling too much messes up the game and takes away some excitement. There was a play in the Duke/NC game last night where the guy drove, was fouled in the air on a layup, landed on one foot and threw the shot up, went in and got the and one. I understand follow through, but some are getting a little ridiculous.I can’t be certain who to credit - I think it was Jalen Rose who said that the NBA figured out that fans were way more interested in seeing cool dunks than traveling calls. For better or worse, that has made it’s way to college, too. My least favorite is when a player is fouled on a drive but the whistle doesn’t blow until the shot doesn’t go in. And yet, it probably makes for better game flow if there are fewer fouls called. I certainly don’t want every 3-second or maybe-carry called.
I'm more annoyed by the whistles that blow in anticipation of contact, but those suck tooI can’t be certain who to credit - I think it was Jalen Rose who said that the NBA figured out that fans were way more interested in seeing cool dunks than traveling calls. That irritates me. It's especially prevalent in late-game catch-up when intentional foul is expected - so they just blow the whistle when someone's close to contact.I'm more annoyed by the whistles that blow in anticipation of contact
