Royals

One of GMDM's top priorities this off-season should be acquiring a major league second baseman. Chris Getz, Elliot Johnson and Jamey Carroll don't qualify.

I ran a correlation analysis between opening day payrolls and current win percentage (as of last night) and the correlation is .29. That means there is a very weak positive correlation between payroll and winning in baseball this year. Last year's was .18: 2012 Payrolls and Wins | FanGraphs Baseball.

Payroll cannot be used as an excuse for losing in baseball anymore.

Figured this thread deserves a bump what with how the last couple weeks of the season are shaping up. Another win today for KC...

We're still in the race! Every time I think we are out, they pull me back in...

Time for a Tampa Bay loss tonight!

Pitching still cruising along, if there score 4 or more they are in pretty good shape for most games.

Need to take the series vs. Detroit if they want to make the playoffs. In control of their own destiny though, with series vs. Detroit and another Vs. CLE

Every game from here on out is important. The next two series against DET and CLE will seal our fate if they are to play in the postseason. At the very least, they will be contenders next year.....unless GMDM decides to trade away Hosmer and Moose for a bag of peanuts and pre-chewed gum.

Maybe we have different definitions of "control their own destiny" but the Royals are still are very, very long shot to make the playoffs. They're still 6.5 games behind Detroit so winning the division isn't really realistic even if they sweep the Tigers in their final 3 game series.

And while they're only 2.5 games back in the race for the final WC spot, they need to leapfrog 4 teams to get that spot. Both scenarios aren't really controlling your own destiny. It's more like pray you finish the season red hot while hoping a whole bunch of teams go in the crapper.

Moose needs to be sent back to Omaha. I don't care what kind of prospect pedigree you have, you can't carry a third baseman who can't even manage an OBP of over .300 unless he's also hitting 40 bombs a year. Moose was bad last year and his offensive numbers are even worse this year. And his body is unfortunately starting to slide toward the Billy Butler side of the body type spectrum.

It is two WC spots that we are talking about though. Texas is about to "go in the crapper" as you write...

Moose is hitting fairly well since the first 2 or so months of the year when he was a total disaster. What you are saying doesn't make any sense given his trajectory this season as well as the fact that we have nobody decent to replace him.... and its September. And he had the game winning hit yesterday. And a walkoff HR last week.

No, the next THREE series will determine our fate. @DET, VS CLE, VS TEX.

In the position we are in now, we have to play very well in ever single series to remain in postseason contention. Any bad series and its probably over. Really, we have to pretty much win at least 2 of 3 in every series the rest of the season to have a chance.

Texas is still a couple of games better than the Rays. However you want to look at it, the Royals have to leapfrog a bunch of teams to claim a WC spot. If they were chasing one team, I'd feel a lot better about their chances. But the odds of everybody that's ahead of KC right now finishing the season like dog feces just aren't high.

Four teams outside looking in, each within 2.5 games of the last WC spot and 16 games to go.

Baseball can be a funny game sometimes...

Just keep winning and take their chances.

New York, Baltimore and Tampa all play each other so someone has to lose. Royals play Cleveland. I think the Royals still control their own fate. If they win out, they will be in. (Note: That is the definition, not saying that will happen.)
