Always liked Ghost and the Darkness. Tombstone was his best role IMO.

Would have to say this movie, Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, & Thunderheart are his off the radar, underrated movies. Wonderland is sneaky good, too, but there have been a lot of adaptations for those murders & what went on there.

Loved him in Heat (supporting role). Great movie (watch the unedited - Michael Mann is the best). His mag change during the shootout after the bank robbery is so good military instructors use it teaching new recruits.

Heat is an all timer. My brother and I will commonly call each other "Waingro" as a teasing pejorative, particularly when playing video games like GTA.

Working and getting laid?

I wanted to see The Doors movie. I just read the book No One Here Gets Out Alive.

Made it through maybe 2 minutes and knew it wasn't working for me. But I haven't seen these movies.

Not that I am doubting you at all man. I believe you. I am probably more amazed that you got laid and Top Gun had literally nothing to do with it. 80's/90's era, Top Gun and Sex pretty much were constants in any romantic equation. Toss in a bottle of Boones Farm and a Firehouse CD and you have a very definitive Circle Diagram.

Topgun is a pretty good movie to start at home if you are looking to get laid.

I'm similar. If I saw top gun it was when it first came out and I was 6. Not a Cruise fan so didn't seek it out as an adult. Tombstone not a Western guy. Did see Batman Forever which is one of the more disappointing Batman movies despite an great cast.

The movie with Kilmer in it that I've seen the most is Magruber.

If you aren’t into westerns I’d still watch these 3:

Tombstone - an ultimate popcorn movie with ridiculous cast, it’s incredibly fast paced compared to the average western

Unforgiven - just an incredible drama and some of the best acting I’ve seen

Once Upon a Time in the West - the most artistically beautiful western (or maybe any movie) for film nerds in terms of cinematography and score. Slower paced epic for someone who likes classic movies.

I just rewatched it. It is not a cinematic masterpiece and is very cheesy in parts but it has a fun pace and a loaded cast. Some of the cast is swing and miss but a few roles are truly great. I didn’t regret the rewatch.

Yeah, you really don't need to like Westerns to like it...but it is a Western. In the Gene Hackman thread a few weeks ago, you got the feeling 99% of the board has seen Hoosiers but I'm sure 99% of the board would love Unforgiven if they had somehow not seen it.

Stuff like High Noon, The Magnificent Seven, or The Good/Bad/Ugly are all objectively great movies too but I'd never tell someone to watch them who "doesn't like westerns" because I know they wouldn't like them.

Once Upon a Time in the West I'd recommend to someone who just likes amazing achievement in the arts. It's just a beautiful looking and sounding thing. It has parts where that beautiful vision is tough and violent, but other times where the beauty is romantic and inspiring.
