For all the effort they put into making his scene from Top Gun: Maverick work this news makes it feel like he was saying goodbye to the film audience as much as he was to acting and the role. RIP

Damn, tough news to see in the morning. One of my favorites roles of his is in "Commanche Moon", one of the Lonesome Dove prequels.

His last film was Top Gun: Maverick.

It's not often an actor has a chance to eulogize their most famous character in their last film in a way that works on a meta/thematic level as eulogizing themselves. Admiral Kazansky and his scene and funeral gave way more emotional weight to a movie about flying badass fighter jets ever had the right to have.

The only other one I can think of in a similar vein was John Wayne in The Shootist.

Real Genius was one of the most underrated movies of the 80s IMO. I have two of the tshirts Kilmer's character wears in that movie. And Michelle Meyrink? And Deborah Foreman? And the final popcorn scene with Tears for Fears and 'Everybody Wants to Rule the World'?

I am a top gun and Tombstone guy. Will Val go down as the Top Gun guy Iceman or Doc Holliday. Both great. Hard to tell which he is most famous for to be honest. Thinking since Top gun kicked it off he will be known more for that.
