NBA: RIP Jerry "The Logo" West

Just heard he passed away at 86. Literally an icon. Or at least his silhouette was.
He, Bob Pettit and Sam Jones were the first NBA perimeter players who successfully displayed modern day jump shooting skills and in West's case, the ability to shoot pull up jumpers off the dribble. Arguably, no one else has ever done that as well as he did.

Young Boxster first paid attention to the NBA in the Jerry West and John Havlicek era. Loved West's high reaching jumper. At some point kid me migrated from favoring the Celtics and Don Nelson to digging the Lakers, and a lot of that was due to West.

At ISU I remember watching the playoffs with Lakers at the old Cave Inn bar. West, Wilt Chamberlain, Elgin Baylor and Gail Goodrich. Fav team plus cheap Bud on tap for the win. Looked it up and it was so long ago that Pat Riley was a PLAYER on the team. JFC, I am getting old.

Odd Couple radio show were having the debate tonight if he was a better player or better executive and it's a tough call. Legend.

He would have been lethal with 3 point line, adjusted for the era in discussion w Steph for greatest shooter ever.

Winning Time was a lot of fiction

I saw him as a GM in the late 80s and 90s and his GM demeanor certainly didn’t match the show from what I saw.

From what i know of Riley, Kareem and Magic, I think those personalities were closer to reality.

Icon of the basketball world. RIP Mr West.

Not sure if this is the time or the place, but they should retire the logo now, and have Jordan on it.

JW is perfect logo for nba. As a player and executive his imprints are all over this league. Plus no way Nike would probably allow it anyway.

I have the exact same memories, except for beer drinking part as I was in elementary school. :) I was a basketballholic growing up and he was my idol.

I also remember how cool he, Goodrich, and company looked in those amazing purple and gold uniforms on our brand new color TV!

Dan Patrick had a touching tribute. Sounds like he took it really hard.
