RIP Bob Weir

I was never into the Dead but my wife was, she went to see them many times with many of our friends at Deer Creek and other places in the 90s.

Was just never my jam but man Weir and Jerry and the band meant so much to so many.

RIP

Legit bummed about this one. I got into the Dead about 3 years ago when Dead and Co was doing their final stadium run. Dead and Co got me going on the Dead and I became hooked. Different shows on constant rotation when I listen to music and I’ve taken in every book and documentary I can find. I loved the story, the cultural impact and most importantly the music.

Wanted so badly to get to their last Sphere run. Was hoping they’d have another run and I’m really gutted I won’t get to see it.

Fair you well, Bob. What a life.

I got to meet him while I was in college at ISU. He was playing with Rat Dog in CR (my home town) at the Paramount Theater.

Went into the fitness club the day before the show that my mom worked at looking for a steam room because his vocal cords are shot.

My mom - a big dead head - checked him in, looked at the visitor form, and was like “oh my god, you’re Bob Weir”. They had a good chat, he offered her tickets and back stage passes, and asked her her favorite song (China Cat Sunflower).

I jumped in the car next day to drive home for the show. They come out for their encore and - sure enough - they break into China Cat Sunflower/I Know your Rider. My mom literally stated crying. Late 40s at the time and dancing in the aisles like th hippy she used to be.

Go back stage, have a couple of beers with him, and all he wants to talk about is where I go to school, what I was studying, if the is any good live music in Ames, etc. I wanted to hear about him but he has no interest in talking about himself.

Tells me and my mom they’d not played that song much but practiced during rehearsal so they could play it that night. They talked about some of the shows my mom saw at the Fieldhouse in IC and the DSM fairground back in the early seventies while my mom was in college. I’m sure neither one of them really remembers much!

One of the coolest guys ever. No ego. Just a normal guy. Would never have known he was in one of the most famous bands of all time. Invited us to come see them again on some tours dates out west but that was obviously not in the cards.

Will always be one of my favorite memories.

RIP Bobby. What a long, strange trip I’m sure it was.

Thank you! Her and my dad both had pretty good taste in music growing up in that generation. They played in a band together until I was a couple of years old

I’m probably going to put the kids to bed and go throw some dead vinyl on with a beer in hand.
