Is it bad every time that I see this bumped I worry something happened...?

:(

Every time it has been good news, though -- some interesting news about Caleb's personality, him and his family being excited about Iowa State, or accomplishing things in other sports, like football and track, before specializing in basketball.

I think this kid can be something special at ISU. The fact that he was that good at multiple sports tells me the kid is a natural athlete and the fact that he hasn't concentrated solely at basketball tells me he still has a lot of room to grow as a player. To me, this seems like a kid who will be a beloved cyclone favorite when all is said and done.

This thread is quite revealing. Maybe hindsight makes a difference, but CG commits and some fans are excited, others are undecided, some are just "Well this is ok, but....". Per 247 he is our highest rated incoming player. Winning all sorts of accolades. Obviously a top quality multi-sports athlete. I can't imagine by this time anyone is anything but thrilled he is a Cyclone.

I guess I'm overly optimistic thinking maybe we can trust our coaches to get the players they need and want with support and encouragement from us fans. I don't often comment on commits, but when I do it is just something simple like "I'm looking forward to watching him from the stands at JTS." We as fans are quite diverse , but I would think we could all agree that a new commit should be welcomed and supported until he or she gives good reason to feel otherwise. Help these young men and women to feel that they made a good choice.

The staff has shown ability to identify talent early that fits Prohm's style and help them develop. It does deserve the benefit of the doubt from fans who just see the stars.

To defend some early meh posts, Grill wasn't very well known for various reasons, lack of AAU exposure due to his track commitments, early commitment to TJ at SDSU, and went from opening his commitment to ISU offer, and committing somewhat surprisingly to ISU in a month. Plus there is always a bit of association on the type of player a white guard from Kansas that most who follow recruiting associate with a player, a spot up shooter average athlete in the Frankamp/Custer mold. As we saw videos and reasons he was lowly ranked (he was in the mid 200's prior to his big jump after the commitment) he has dispelled that comparison and looks like a P5 athlete who should be able to defend and dunk with the best in the B12 conference. Lot of upside that is just now being known.

I have a feeling Caleb will be a guy that really competes and he will bring it every time he is on the floor. We have a several of those guys on this team now. I have to believe our chemistry will be much better this year.

The fact that Otz wanted him is all I needed to hear back before all this amazing stuff he's been doing.

Whoever brought up the Haluska comparison, well done. That's the best comparison I've seen yet. You could always tell Haluska was an athlete who happened to play basketball. He turned into a great player. If Grill makes his outside shot more consistent, he will be a solid to really good 4-year player.

When you watch his film, there's a difference between what Grill was doing and what guys like Custer and Eikmeier were doing. Custer (I was always a fan, just didn't work out with Monte here) was a pure PG who knew angles and could shoot. Eikmeier was a pure HS sniper from outside but played in one of the smallest classes in Nebraska. Grill is throwing it down in traffic with either hand. That takes a special athlete no matter the competition. Custer and Eikmeier turned out to be solid to really good mid-major players. I think Grill is better.

You stop it with your nuanced, intelligent analysis.

Grill, Custer, and Eikmeier are all white dudes. Therefore, they must all be (1.) scrappy, (2.) heady players, and (3.) spot-up Phil Forte III types.

This "dunking with both hands in traffic" stuff has got to stop. :p

Grill dreamed of playing for Iowa State. He would pretend to be Niang in driveway hoops against his brother. He has the look of a kid who should be playing for the Hawkeyes, yet wanted to go to Iowa State and shoot hook shots like Georges. Pasty white exterior belies...https://www.desmoinesregister.com/s...-state-basketball-dream-come-true/1219919001/

Oh, I know that whole story. He has looked very good this year.

I wonder why he's not ahead of Jackson on the depth chart (and this is not a shot at Jackson by any stretch) right now. Grill is taller and probably longer, probably a better athlete, and has shot better and made some good instinct plays on defense. I think the competition between the two of them for that "last" guard spot this year is going to be interesting. I would like to keep seeing both. Grill earned some minutes tonight out in Oregon, and I think he earned even more for next week. I am glad we have both of them to solidify our guard corps for years to come -- 2/4 on a recruiting class like this is just fine.

Having those two up to speed makes me feel great about the future, even with Nixon departing and Tyrese maybe going with him on his way to the NBA.

I’m guessing it has to do with Jackson being a pg. Jackson has been a better on-ball defender than I anticipated, and likely has shown in practice to be a better shooter.

Both need as much playing time as is available imo. For a team that needs shooters, it’s odd Grill got a DNP. Hopefully not a Conditt situation from a year ago.
