Recording lectures and using AI to transcribe note

Currently brushing up on my conversational Spanish with ChatGPT. It's brilliant. Excellent feedback and reinforcement. Like a private tutor for free. Can't beat that with a stick.
Can you expound on this?

Can you expound on this?

What would you like to know?

I told Chat that I was going to (back to) Spain and needed to brush up on my conversational Spanish, and boom! It offers me dialogues, vocabulary, itineraries...and it can do that all in Spanish or English. It also will correct whatever you type in if you want it to. Definitions, explanations, and more.

At one point, I said something, and it replied that what I had said was Mexican Spanish, and that in Spain, the expression was [whatever it was].

Currently doing everything in Spanish, and if I don't get something, I ask "¿Qué quiere decir ...? and it will tell me with grammar explanations and expanded dialogue, the whole kielbasa.

Also offers positive reinforcement and is super polite and positive.

Definitely fits my learning style.

Tu rendimiento puede variar.

No hay problema. Tell it you want to learn Mexican Spanish. You can ask in English. Tell it to correct you. It will. (but gently)

Every once in a while, it will say you've hit your limit in GPT-5. Don't worry. You can continue all day and all night if you want to.

No tengas miedo.

I plugged your comment into AI, and it says you have “network connectivity problems.”
Be better.

I network poorly, to be extremely generous to me. (Pathetic would be more accurate, but I'll be my fan for a moment.)

Regarding the original post, one of the issues an instructor may likely have with such a request is a desire not to feed the AI beast in lieu of people learning (like another post mentions as a benefit of taking notes).

In the heavily politicized higher ed world of right now, recordings can be a tool for attacking instructors and institutions. 10 years ago, I would have signed off on such a thing right away. Today, it would be a red flag of a likely problem student who doesn't have the skills they need for college, which will turn into a lovely series of meetings and/or emails when they bomb the class.

If I just got a request off hand from a student for an in-person class, I'd say no today. However, if that request came through the necessary official channels, meaning a disability accommodation that comes via the Dean of Students office, that's different. That's an actual, documented need as opposed to the skill issue.

So if it's an issue, the best approach is to make it official and work through the Dean of Students office. If it's just a skill thing, getting better is the whole point of this anyway.

I was great at taking notes. I could fit so much information on a tiny little piece of paper that conveniently fit perfectly down by my lap that I could look at while taking tests.

Biggest thing about taking notes for me was to have read the content ahead of the lecture. So rather than trying to comprehend the entire subject, you’re just looking for details and clarifications that you write as notes.

Taking the notes manually helps you retain the information. I don't mind people using AI to help streamline things but becoming too dependent on it will make you ineffective without it.
If that is YOUR learning style. This is not true for everyone.

Im old and started using an AI recorder/ transcription device about 9 months ago. I still took paper notes for the first month or so then stopped when I realized the AI notes were better.
I’ve tried different devices / software Fieldly, Plaude, Bee and fathom for zoom. A bee is probably what I’d recommend for class notes
It is amazing how much more present I am in meetings without thinking about note taking.
I wouldn’t ask anyone if I were you. Always better to beg forgiveness than ask permission. Iowa is a one party consent state so you’re fine with regard to the law.

As a reporter I had a hard time taking notes and getting quotes accurate. I depended a lot on recording my interview and taking notes at same time. Worked great for me.
