I hope to enroll at Iowa State in the fall 2026 semester with a major in Kinesiology/Exercise Science. I am horrible at note taking trying to write down notes and follow along with the Professor and often get lost in the mix. Do the Professors in the Kinesiology program allow you to record their lectures and us AI to transcribe the lecture into notes? If they do what are your recommendations for an app that will be able to write notes, and make flash cards?

Honestly I am the same way. Can’t focus on two things at once. My college days are long behind me but good job knowing your strengths and trying to get ahead of it.

Not sure what professors will allow but I will say one of the biggest benefits from AI I've had at work is Zooms AI summaries. Forget the full recording it does a pretty good job of noting down key takeaways from meetings and listing action items. Extra useful when double booked (or in this case, skipping class).

Looks like ISU students have free access to Genio, https://sas.dso.iastate.edu/assistive-technology

Taking the notes manually helps you retain the information. I don't mind people using AI to help streamline things but becoming too dependent on it will make you ineffective without it.
This, I believe there are studies out there that say if you’re more apt to retaining the material if you listen to a lecture, read/watch the lecture and take notes as opposed to doing just one or two of those things.

I wish you good luck in this big undertaking.
I have no advice, I went to school too long ago.

1. Ask your instructor. Could be that s/he already posts lecture notes / PowerPoints/ study guides etc online.

2. Get help from the Academic Success Center. Talk to an Academic Coach. That's their jam.

I can't imagine any instructor refusing to let the class be recorded - it's not copyrighted material, for Crissakes. After which you do your transcription as you please. I do think an instructor would object to you not showing up and expecting to have your classwork delivered by Door Dash (which is not what you are asking).

There are plenty of people who learn best by LISTENING and LOOKING, not by reading and writing. Nothing at all to be ashamed of.

Good luck to you in your studies, and bravo for thinking ahead on how best to succeed. That is a useful skill to have in any walk of life.

I use AI every single day in the business world. I have it listen to my sales calls, transcribe, provide feedback and then take what was discussed during the call and write a statement of work. I obviously proof everything but it is a game changer, saves me hours every week.

Currently brushing up on my conversational Spanish with ChatGPT. It's brilliant. Excellent feedback and reinforcement. Like a private tutor for free. Can't beat that with a stick.
