Reasonable Football Expectations

About the only inexcusable thing that could happen is a loss to UNI.

Anything else is fine. I am just looking for something different than what I've seen lately. Running the same freaking offense as the rest of the conference with the 6th tier guys from Texas wasn't suppose to work. I'm also hoping for a real Defense. Wally was great but that defense never felt right until the last season and even then, it wasn't great.

Isn't UNI supposed to be pretty good this year? I don't think it would be inexcusable in the first game. New system, new coaches, a green oline and an opponent that is definitely going to be up for the game. Now ISU should win but i wouldn't be shocked if they didn't. Now if it's year 3 and they lose to UNI that is inexcusable

A loss to UNI would set this program back another 3 years and bury this coaching staff with the fanbase immediately. UNI is must win every time.

I think that is a little much saying it would set them back three years and bury the staff.

That's a bit much. I think their recruiting efforts have bought them some time. A loss to UNI would take some of the shine off for sure, but a lot of fans are already looking a couple years ahead. Unless the bottom totally falls out in year one, Campbell's going to get a long honeymoon period. Keeping them competitive and winning 4-6 this yearwhile continuing to land legit recruits will keep most fans happy for now.

This. If the new staff was scuffling along and adding mid tier talent then there would already be plenty of doubt, and a loss to UNI would just be validation for that doubt. But they've been killing it on the recruiting trail, and that buys a lot of goodwill with this fanbase.

I hope the new coaching staff has higher expectations in year one than most of the people posting in this thread.

I'd be willing to bet at least about 55,000 of the 60,000 people sitting in JTS when we play UNI won't know a damn thing about the recruiting going on and/or care about said recruiting if we lose to UNI.

At the very least I hope they know that losing to UNI is unacceptable. Apparently that isn't a big deal to some.

Not really, no. It'd be a bad start. But if you're making this game a must win, then you're setting yourself up for disappointment. UNI is a good program that in recent history has given ISU problems. A loss would hurt but it wouldn't be all that surprising, and suggesting that it would bury the staff and set the program back three years is overstating things. Give the guy at least a year to build the program.

Boy I better go tell Warren and Lazard and Tucker and so many others that they just don't have talent. Don't mind the stats or facts. Too funny.

The stats:

2015: Passing efficiency: 90th
Passing Efficiency Defense: 111th
Scoring offense: 93rd
Scoring defense: 97th
Sacks allowed: 126th
Passing YPA: 93rd
Turnover Margin: 113th

All stats from NCAA.org http://stats.ncaa.org/rankings?sport_code=MFB&division=11

There are individuals with talent on this team. I do not believe the talent level is great, as evidenced by the stats and facts from last year. I wish it wasn't the case but by any measure, the team was terrible last year.

If you expect this team to win 6 games next year, you are expecting something that has happened twice in the history of the Big 12, which is a team winning 3 games or less winning 6 games or more the next year.

It's really pretty simple. If you thought Rhoads should have won more than 3 games last year ( and every one of you did no matter what you say now ) then expecting less from the new coach with more talent is covering your rear end.

I thought ISU would win 4 games last year. I expect ISU to win 4 games this year.

And I disagree with you on more talent, it is debatable. Either way, even if it's more, that doesn't mean it's good.

I'm sorry guys, but there's never a time where it's ok to lose to an FCS team. I'm not saying we should fire the staff if they do, or that they couldn't turn it around if they do, but that is absolutely an embarrassment if it happens. I know some of you are just trying to "keep your nut cups on" but being ok with losing to an FCS team because "they're a good program" is not acceptable.

That said, I have no doubt Coach Campbell and staff will have the guys ready and will win that game pretty comfortably.

Yeah, there's never really a time to shrug off a loss to an FCS team.

I am reasonably expecting 5 wins. But I would be disappointed if we dont reach 6.

I know that seems crazy when we have only won 5 games in the past 2 seasons. But think of this.

2014
-Lost to K-State in the possibly worst officiated football game I've ever seen at Jack Trice. But coaching could have allowed us to win anyway
-Lost to Texas in a heartbreaker when defensive coaching allowed Texas to drive the whole field in 30 seconds and win
-Lost to Texas Tech at the last second

Should have been 5-7

2015
-We all know about not centering the ball at Toledo
-Gave up 21 point lead to OSU
-K-State game which is worst game I have ever watched. Maybe the first time I have every actually laughed out loud at losing a game

Should have been 6-6 and that doesnt include the collapse against Iowa.

All 3 of those games this past season, and at least 2 of the games in 2014 would have been won with better coaching. I know Campbell is new and we need to be patient. But even with Paul's terrible recruiting he was basically at a bowl game every year if coaching hadn't hindered his staff. I have no doubt Campbell will have us in contention for a bowl this year and even better next year with just his coaching staff's talent alone. I cant wait for the next few years when this staff begins to develop players, which seems to be their strong suit

I think that if we can develop some solid quarterback play that this team is capable (key word being capable, not will) of 7 wins. If not, I'm going with 4-5 wins.
