Reasonable Football Expectations

So is this thread a preemptive meltdown thread?

Yep. It's the guys that demanded Rhoads be gone for not winning 4 games saying that wiIl be okay with better talent returning.

4 games... ?

UNI
Kansas
SJSU
Kansas State
Iowa
Texas Tech
Texas

The rest get tougher but there are winnable games there too. 4 wins with good talent returning all over the field? Notice none of these guys actually list all the talent ISU has returning which is significant. They just default to the oline because they know that's the only obvious concern (just like last year btw).

Get real. Cydkar could win 4 games with this team and that schedule.

My expectations are that the o-line will be extremely bad, and outside of Lazard we have serious receiver problems. I love warren but he'll be running in a box the whole time.

I'm also really concerned about d ends, linebackers, and corner/safety outside of Cotton-Moyà.

Why don't you tell me where the significant talent is? All of the significant talent on the roster added up to 8 games over the last three years.

And all say it again, a team going from 3 wins or less to a bowl has happened twice in the history of the big 12.

Mental health welfare check: I just want to make sure you know that you are on an ISU FOOTBALL message board?

We've lost to UNI recently, no number of wins is guaranteed or expected.

4 games minimum.......would still be an improvement over the last 3 years of CPR. We lost a lot of players to injuries that had to call it a career. Dan Burton was a huge loss on the OL. Add in the loss of Jordan Harris who transferred.

It is the first year for Coach Campbell and Staff. I am willing to cut some slack as Coach Campbell implements his system. I was also patient with CPR and was a huge supporter and took a lot of flack for it, up until the K-State meltdown. That was the final straw.

It was time for CPR to go. Accept it and move on. Get behind the new coach.. Same thing with Prohm. Support him and get behind him. Fred is gone. Move on.

Are you comparing a coach in his first year to a coach in his 7th? OR do you think CPR was let go based only on last years results?

Gotta go with D UP Clones - 7 is doable! Can CMC overcome the hype and coach these guys to a few more wins? Has he loaded the team with D Backs all over the place? The QB loaded conference will be heavy on passing - except us. MW is our B&B and need to get him the rock. Having D Backs chase him all over the field once he is through the line will open up the field for LanRam and that cannon - find Lazard and go at them! We have suffered through 3 years of The Mess and The Fat Man - maybe a real OC resembling Tom Herman is back. Not saying he is but better than those last 2 bums. Just stop with that terrible double WR behind the line throw - our WR's could not block my deceased granny so it never works. Just play like you want to actually win!

Next Job.....Ohio State
My hope is that he's successful like VT's Beemer. And, like Beemer, stays at the school till career's end. (Wishing doesn't make it so, I know that ;-)

Say, this reminds me of the interview CW did with CMC on Thursday. Have you listened to it? Great interview. In it, he says he did not grow up a fan of any one university. (Or, maybe I'm thinking of the interview with Coach Kuz. . . .)

I am tempering my expectations of the OL until I see them play. On paper, they should struggle, but there is a new OL coach, plus a head coach that was an OL coach and an Offensive Coordinator now. Experience is great, but I still believe that coaching does make a huge difference.

The biggest key to the offense is to figure out how to make other teams LBers play pass defense, something CPRs teams never could do. Get those guys at least thinking they have to play pass defense and the whole dynamic of their defense changes. No more freaking WR screens unless other teams are begging you to throw them.

They will be inexperienced and raw in the trenches, that usually doesn't mean a lot of wins.

Smart call is 3 wins, but my hope is that ISU just appears to develop on the field over the course of the season and exhibit some competency on a consistent basis by year's end.

But I've never really set a high bar for ISU football, so
¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Here is my expectation of wins in order of easiest to hardest. I say we win 4, but would not be surprised if we win 6. I say we will be more competitive in all the games instead of losing by 30! we were 3-9 last year with some pretty close games.

should wins...
UNI
Kansas
San Jose State

Could wins....
Kansas State Should win, but snyder is a genius
Texas I put them up high as we owned them in ames last year.
Texas Tech our defense never made the trip last year.
West Virginia
Iowa it was tied with 3 minutes left and lost by 14, but they are going to be pretty confident.

Less Likely to win...
Baylor we played them close last year
Oklahoma State it was close last year, but they are better than us.
TCU it was closer than i thought it would be last year.
Oklahoma can never beat them, just chalk it up as an L

So no part of the defense that has ranked 128 and 109 in yards per game the last two years gives you concern? Or backup RB? Or a TE group that had 6 catches last year?

Should beat UNI, SJSU, and Kansas. KSU should be winnable, because those were winnable games the last two years with competent head coaching. This year isn't about wins; it's about installing a system, finding out what players can fit that system, building a foundation for the program, and changing the "happy with mediocre" mindset.

I really think there is enough talent to win 6 or 7 games. That being said I don't think that people are thinking about how much transition there is with a new coaching staff. It could go well but there is a high likelihood of some strugle.

I am trying to be cautious about this year, but I just watched Jake's video so:

1) I think our defense will be significantly better this year than last year
2) I think our offense will be equal to last year (better QB play, questions on the OL, Warren and Lazard a year older)
3) I think most teams in the big 12 will not be as good as they were last year. We will be better.
4) I think by mid year we were more physical than most teams we played
5) We we were competitive with everyone except OU. We should have won more.
6) The schedule is back loaded for wins, if we get some unexpected wins early it could be a real fun season.
7) CMC and the staff have greatly surpassed my expectations to this point in recruiting. Why should I not expect them to do the same this fall.

3-5 wins, with 4 being most likely.

I'm well aware that's no better than Rhoads' expectations, but the big difference is that Rhoads was in year 6 and Campbell is now in year one. With the OL situation that Campbell was handed, expectations should be pretty low. I could easily see 3 wins this year as a possibility. You just can't have a below average OL and expect much at all.

Let's get back to reality as you contradicted yourself in the last paragraph. Not "Happy with mediocre" yet accepting poor?

It doesnt take years to implement an offense or defense. Rhoads turned ISU around year one as have many other coaches made immediate progress especially when inheriting some experienced talent as Campbell is.

Backup running back? Backup? Thanks for pointing out one of the easiest positions to build depth with freshmen. This a minor concern at best.

Tight end? Really? This is one of the least important positions on the field. I don't care what offense you are referring to. Even Iowa gets by with below average tight ends at times. Pretty simple why. Tight ends get open usually through scheme and play action and not through ability to separate. After the catch, it's usually a few yards and tackled. Rotate a blocker in for other plays.

All big 12 running back, all big 12 receiver (other experienced receivers), experienced quarterback who showed promise with juco back ups. Couple young talented olinemen off redshirt with three players that played significant time. Juco coming in along with others. Certainly a concern but very similar to last year.

Defensive line : one of the best ISU has returned in a long time....experience with a playmaker inside. Young dend's backing up off redshirt that have talent.

Linebackers return and they rave about Harvey. (Loss of Harris is on this staff...no excuse there) They botched that.

Dbacks. Experience in 4 year guys and juco talent. Should be deep and talented. Transfers coming in too.

Kicker..should be good
punter. Did well enough

If this team wins less than 4 games it won't be because of a lack of talent to win more.

That's why we hired a new coach. To win more than 3 games. Especially with better talent than ISU has had in years returning.

Guys,

I know that we have been doing a good job recruiting with this new football staff, but we are still Iowa State. Have your nutcups ready for the football season. Please. Otherwise the meltdown will be that much worse.

Beat the Hawks in their superbowl, win 5-6, and hopefully go to a bowl game. Season ends with high hopes for what next year might bring. Offers start to trickle in for Campbell from every school looking for a turnaround.
