Really stupid taunting call.

Anyone know, Is this the same official that ruled an interception rather than a Marchie Murdoch TD against OSU a few years ago?

I agree -- the intent of the rule is to prevent excessive celebration / taunting before a player gets into the end zone, so in the Iowa State vs. Oklahoma State case, the flag seems a little ridiculous. I remember worrying when Darius Reynolds held the ball out (I believe vs. UConn in 2012), and I was worried they may throw a flag and bring it back, but we lucked out on that one.

Actually found the highlight there:

He didn't alter his stride length. If you measure his stride it was 66" for each step

ha well you could say he "altered his stride" or "pointed the ball at an opponent" which are both rules explicitly laid out in the ncaa rulebook for unsportsmanlike (and this was around when the rule was changed)

happy we didn't get anything called, but I'd rather not test the waters -- some officials are going to be more touchy about that than others (and maybe some just looking for an excuse to throw a flag)

It was taunting by the letter of the rule, I get that, but how about the refs gathering together and if they have to look at the replay to make sure that X was really trying to show up an OSU player or there team?

This is just like the helmet to helmet rule, if you call it every time the defender brushes up against helmet of the kid he is tackling, half the defense would be kicked out each game, from both sides.

Gather, review the play, and then pick up the flag. X never looked back, did not show the ball to the defender, just high stepped one stride on his way into the endzone. At worse the official should have come over to him and warned him, but not thrown a flag.

Did looking back factor into it?

He looked back but I'm not convinced it was anything outside of one last check as a defender was trailing about 10 yards behind.

The worst part of all this is it overshadows an incredible day by Hutch. He likely earned himself a lot of money with that performance on a big stage. They'll show those highlights in his draft reel.

ISU needs to put that TD in his highlight tape along with the other two. No one drafting him will even know about the flag if edited the right way.

It's not "taunting."
It's not "excessive celebration."

It's unsportsmanlike conduct -- and that exact situation is in the rule book. Just run into the ******* end zone and drop the ball.

Funny how many people 'dumbed' this like the referee didn't call it unsportsmanlike conduct.

Bingo. It’s a simple matter. He did not do anything worthy of drawing that flag. A it wasn’t even close.

Worked out well in the end for us though. I love how we went right back to Hutch.
Three times right? I will have to check the replay but I think we went to Hutch 3 times there.

edit:
It was actually twice. Purdy faked to him on the jet sweep and kept it for 4 yards on the second play.

For many it's overshadowing a really hard fought, much needed win for this team and program.

My biggest issue is with the rule itself. That should NEVER take points off the board even if he did a cartwheel and 3 back flips. Call the 15 yard penalty and enforce it on the PAT or kickoff and move on. Erasing points for that is crazy.

FWIW I know we benefited from a call like that in the Alamo Bowl and I thought it was stupid then too.

What’s low key awesome and maybe it’s already been discussed is that ref got clocked or tripped or something and lost his hat not long after this and was super pissed about it. Happened right In front of us.

It's not on the same level but sort of similar to targeting. Last week initially a KSU player got called for it (got picked up) and it would have been a stupid call if it held up.

They need to revisit both.
