Realignment Megathread (All The Moves)

Right now it's Virginia or Duke (whichever one doesn't go with NC to the SEC) and Miami or GT. Outside shot for Stanford. Michigan/Wisconsin voting block wanted them last time over Oregon to pair with Washington but the OhioSt/PennSt voting block won out.

Id guess right now its Virginia/GT to the B10 and FSU/Clemson,NC/Duke to SEC
Interested in where you heard any of this as this is a hard counter to everything I have seen/heard

Personal opinion, politics involved, and reading between of lines of what I've heard from people I believe to be in the know.

Don't believe B10 will have first choice and if the SEC wants to add 2 I think two more shortly follow.

Academics and state populations/future potential students will absolutely matter for the B10. Where as the SEC is more brands and state populations/future potential students.

North Carolina has first choice and Im believe right now they prefer the SEC

I think the Florida board rejecting President Ono from getting the Florida job will prevent Florida St from getting an offer. Somewhat affect Miami but they still have a shot.

Don't see anyway Clemson goes B10.

That leaves Virginia vs Duke and what the SEC prefers to have new state to pull from or brand value.
I'll be shocked if UNC winds up in the SEC. Don't see that happening at all.

Agreed. The only thing southern about that University is where it happens to be located geographically.

They'd say yes to the Big Ten before they finished the question.

Sometimes the obvious answer is the right one. The Big Ten takes Virginia and North Carolina to get to 20. FSU, Miami, Georgia Tech, Pitt would be in that next tier if they decide to go beyond 20.

If SEC goes with UNC, Duke, FSU, and Clemson, which I think is likely, the BIG has a difficult path

They’d really need ND in order to pay for expansion into the population centers you mentioned imo. At least with basketball schools, future profit may change.

But getting ND requires liquidation of the ACC, as well as help from ESPN, if not the SEC

If those 4 brands leave the ACC it’s basically liquidized. BIG can take Virginia and GT to get into new states/markets including the sec backyard in Atlanta and maintain their academics matter facade. Leaves Miami and Stanford as the 2 biggest brands left for the big 12 and then take whoever else to pair to go to 20. Of course Stanford could choose to go independent with Cal and then they form a scheduling alliance with ND and the new PAC but I doubt that’s very profitable for them.

If the ACC liquidates with those schools taken, I’d think there are far better options than Stanford.

My pecking order would be:
Miami
Va Tech
NCSU
SMU
Stanford

Cal

Leaving out the most absolute lock for the B12 in your rankings?

Perhaps, but liquidation of the ACC is the easy part in terms of corralling ND

If Miami, GT, UVa, VT, Stanford, and Cal remain, we’ll need the BIG to take a couple more before the ACC collapses. If not, Stanford and Co will try to pull from the Big 12, and with the ACCN and exit fees to spend, could

BIG adding schools that don’t add value in UVa and GT would be great for Big 12. Hopefully they also grab Stanford and Cal

SMU has a lot of coin
NC St as a school with all their research would fit really well into the B12.

If ACC still has 2 of Clemson, FSU, Miami, or NC, I wouldn't be shocked to see no ACC defections. Or if FSU, Clemson, or NC are still around (Miami by itself doesn't have the pull unless they become a juggernaut again), still not sure if anybody from the ACC goes to the Big 12. Hope I am wrong.

The ACC teams love their network, love being in the ACC, and view the Big 12 as being beneath them. Unlike the Pac, the ACC added teams to withstand defections and would add more if anybody else leaves to stay at a minimum 16.

Also I really feel like the SEC and Big10 are happy with the current set up. The dust has barely settled on the previous realignment, I think it’s going to be much later then 2030 before see see other additions. Especially when outside of ND none are actually additive to the conferences

Good? Bad?

Saturday’s Kansas State-Iowa State college football game from Dublin, Ireland, averaged 4.01 million viewers on ESPN — down about 20% from 5.0 million for Florida State-Georgia Tech last year

I’d say pretty good. I’d imagine Florida State would draw a lot of viewers

You think the Maryland AD is misinformed?

We’ll be adding this to the long list of your incorrect realignment predictions

Not great, but there’s no question we aren’t FSU

The conditions and BIG-like football didn’t help imo. Kind of a rough watch to casual fans

I wonder how many people flipped it off when neither team could do anything with the ball in a downpour or see any lines on the field.

I tend to agree. I think 2030 is when the serious discussions will start to happen. If both conferences want UNC, and they’re still on level ground by then, neither will sit and wait for the other to make a move. I’d target UNC leaving 2-3 years before the end of the ACC TV deal similar to OuT. So negotiations in 2030 with the move starting in the 2033 or 2034 season.

But, that’s a long time away. And the entire landscape of college sports will likely change by then. So who knows? Maybe we’ll have a centralized management structure by then and not independent conferences?

Feel if Big 10 goes beyond 20, then additional West Coast schools will be in the mix.

Historically, BTN carriage fees have been a big reason for expansion targets. With subscription services & DTC Fox, Peacock it will be curious if market size continues to play a dominant expansion criteria along with brand.
